i dont mind boro.. happy for them to have a good season as i dont feel much of a rivalry.. i just dont agree with posters saying they are similar to us. good people down boro and they are a decent club not a nothing club as i said before. prefer them than a london team in the prem.

I will tell you what I have realised over the years living down on Teesside

Middlesbrough is not really a football town/city in the sense that Sunderland is.

When you watch people playing the 1st bars of Can’t Help Falling in Love and immediately every supporter in the land thinks Sunderland.
When you see the English keeper having a song from his own fans referencing his Sunderland roots.
Groups from all over the world supporting us.
References to great Cup finals ( capital C) referring to the Montgomery save , and the Porterfield goal. Bob Stokoe running over the turf. You never hear the league cup 2004 mentioned.

Ex players and managers like Henderson , Roy Keane , Quinny , Peter Reid all publicly backing us and appearing joyous ( not pleased, joyous) at us doing well.

National commentators saying the club is Back where at club and support its size deserves to be. Back in the league they have won 6 times
Even the badge referencing the ship building history.

The magnificent marketing of Til the End , little kids all over the country when the see the cats eyes they know it’s us.
Look at some of the Tifos. Just class.

Maybe it was the Sunderland till I die which got a lot of the country invested in us doing well ?

It’s just something Boro don’t have. Not knocking them , there is not a lot they can do about it. They just don’t have the charisma we have as a club.
They are not up there in the national football psyche like we are

Parmos, Pigbag and Roary the Lion can only take you so far.

And I believe , deep down , a lot of Boro fans get that. And what makes them more sick than Sunderland winning , was the way the national media fawned over us anyway , win or lose.

Every fan thinks their club is special, you are no different - nobody else really notices.

From Samson the Cat, Elvis covers, Peter Reid, to netflix docuseries, bob stokoe, to cheesey chips see Roary the Lion, Steel River, Bryan Robson, Juninho documentaries on sky sports, Last minute wins in European semi finals and yes Parmos.

I'm sure Coventry fans think they are special because Keith Houchen scored a diving header once.

Every fan in the country thinks what you have just said. None of us really are, only to our own fan base

Every football fan will big up their own club and your post is certainly well thought out.

I will say this though. During my lifetime, I've seen my club win a trophy and reach a European cup final. I haven't seen Sunderland achieve either of these things.

There will be some on here (possibly yourself even) who will have seen Sunderland win a trophy, but those who are my age or a similar won't have. I feel thankful that I was brought up to support the Boro and can cherish those special memories.

Wev , sorry man but you’re wrong here. Having spent the weekend in The Smoke and hearing it , feeling it , I get it now.

Then watching replays of the match and listening to neutral commentators.
Talking to randoms from all over the country in London. The overwhelming message was , we want you back up there , you need to be back up there. Then referencing the things I mentioned.

Nobody would say the same about say Cov, Stoke, Palace, Norwich or Boro.

We just have something about us.

On reflection , my post being on this thread will be perceived as a dig v Boro , when really it is more an appreciation of Sunderland.

I'm really not wrong. You only support Sunderland. Honestly it's the same every time.

If it's hometown boy Dean Windass scoring for Hull in the last minute in a play off final.

Or Nottingham Forest winning and returning the big time finally

Those neutral commentators you refer to were all over that too. Their fans walking away from Wembley thinking we are special and have "something about us".

Every club experiences magical moments and yes it makes the fans think it is special. It's what makes it so good.

Sunderland fans haven't had many reasons to be "in the moment" post 1973 in all fairness, so I can appreciate that.

Forest I might give you , due to Cloughie , their European Cup wins. They are deemed a “club” by the nation. They have a bit about them.

Hull ? No.
