O Lucky Man! (1973) 8/10
Sequel to If... Brilliant musical interludes from MLF Alan Price. The film itself is quite anarchic, with many of the cast appearing in multiple roles (including Arthur Lowe in blackface as an African dictator). Often goes meta, and ends with director Lindsay Anderson mingling with the cast at the wrap party.

R.P.M. (1970) 5/10
Very much of its time. Students occupy a university building. To negotiate with them, the administrators call in a sociology professor (Anthony Quinn), on the grounds that he sleeps with a lot of his students and therefore must be on their wavelength. Quinn comes across as a slimy misogynist, and the inter-generational debates are tedious.

Heartland (1979) 9/10
If Heaven's Gate was a domestic drama it'd be something like this. A widow travels with her daughter to rural Wyoming to work for rancher Rip Torn (whose accent veers between Scotland and Scandinavia). Pulls no punches in illustrating the harshness of life in the West. Great central performance from Conchata Ferrell. Full movie on YouTube.

The Spider and the Fly (1949)

France, just before the First World War. Eric Portman is a detective trying to nail suave gentleman thief Guy Rolfe for job after job, but he always has an alibi. Both men fall for Nadia Gray.

I found this absorbing. There’s a fantastic dynamic between the two leads. Rolfe despises the police, and Portman wants to jail someone who is outwitting him constantly. Yet they respect each other as people. There’s a great scene at one point that reminded me of the end of the Donald Pleasance Columbo episode. I’ve read a couple of reviews of this film that criticises Portman’s performance, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The dialogue is sharp throughout, and there’s some excellent photography.

In support we have George Cole, James Hayter and Arthur Lowe. The film takes a sharp turn of direction at one point that feels somewhat jarring, but then again, I guess that reflects reality. The second half is absorbing for different reasons. There’s some decent tension at some points, and the ending seems divisive, but I liked it, and it made sense to me.

This film is all about the two main characters, though.

7.5/10

Alien: Romulus 6.5/10.

Mmm, too much reference to other Alien films, in trying to be clever he is honouring events that haven't happened yet.

ignoring that major annoyance, it's ok, slow to get going, the "comic relief" is a shockingly bad actor from Coalville, and i f***ing hate east midlands accents laark, xenomorphs that seem to lose interest/disappear to enable escape. slick

Some clever plot devices and it is pretty slick and next time i may enjoy it more knowing the schtick quotient.
Far too generous!

Not sure where to find them but if you can I highly recommend

White dog - Samuel fuller
A dog is rescued by a girl who accidentally runs it over. Turns out it's a dog trained to kill black people by a racist. Wont give away much more. That dog should of received an Oscar

Wake in fright - Ted kocheff
Australian drama/thriller
A school teacher working in a remote village tries to get home to Sydney during the school holidays, ends up stuck in a village after losing his money on gambling with people that have a strange way of living. There's a scene where they hunt actual kangaroos in real life which some people might feel uncomfortable with

A 10-minute compilation of scenes from Kung Fury 2 has been leaked. Contains lots of spoilers, but as the film itself has been in post-production limbo for five years with no current prospect of release, you'll probably have forgotten everything by the time it surfaces officially.

I can’t even remember seeing the first one. I can’t understand how it’s passed me by. I’ve got a massive martial arts film collection, so this should be right up my street!

The first one was a low-budget crowdfunded 30-minute featurette. It seems its unconventional financing is one of the reasons the sequel is in limbo - there's some dispute over who owns what.

Mr Majestyk (1974)

Charles Bronson is a watermelon farmer. He’s arrested after he runs a rogue crew off his farm. He gets entangled in the getaway of career villain Al Lettieri when his mob attack a prison bus. Lettieri ends up waging war on Bronson.

I’ve always had a soft spot for this. It’s on Amazon Prime, so I thought I’d give it another spin. It’s still good. Most of the action is slow, but purposeful. The cast are lively and the dialogue keeps things moving. The truck chase is a cracker.

Loved that film, when he goes off roading in the pick up and the cars have to use the road, always liked Bronson.

AND, I was already pissed off by the sleeve, cover and Home screen before I pressed play, won't specify but most will know.
I think for me it was the complete lack of Xeno. Then when they were there it was AvP level.

Then the end was f***ing shite. Everything I hate about the insistence on end of level baddie type stuff. FFS, the Xeno is terrifying itself!
