Test squad Zimbabwe (and let’s make it the match thread)

Not announced yet but won’t be long

This is their possible squad. Absolutely right if Bethell misses out, Bashir has to miss out for me.

England (possible): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook*, Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, Shoaib Bashir, Sonny Baker*, Ben McKinney* (*uncapped)

Posting this btw

i respect everyone’s opinions on who they think should be on the team, that’s all pub chat but the golf chat on here is just utterly cringe, not even funny and more importantly just like utter bollocks.

Chunky my team

Should be a rule btw no like / ..offering 2 choices

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Smith
Stokes
Dawson
Woake
Tongue
Potts

Now I’m not big on Dawson I think leach is a better bowler myself but it’s his batting that persuades me

An old Duncan fletcher thing was just make sure your spinner bats then you can pick any fast bowlers you want. Dawson is a genuine good batsman

Im not saying id pick him in Australia tho btw
There’s absolutely no doubt Bashir will play though

I’d have Crawley out. But we’ve been there

Woakes is unfit I think, hence they likely pick Cook. Even more reason for Dawson batting. Otherwise agree

The pace attack was tricky, feel like I’m missing someone, but maybe theyre all injured

Wasn’t sold on Woakes either

I really like tongue and think give Potts the new ball, only worry is cook bowls out Zimbabwe for nothing twice on a may pitch then we feel we have to pick him for India

You’re missing Atkinson. He will probably play

Batting line up picks itself (let’s face it for all the talk about Crawley he isn’t getting dropped).

Atkinson is guaranteed and I’d rather bring Ashley Giles out of retirement than pick Bashir so it’s surely Tongue, Potts and Cook to round out the team.

Totally forgot about Atkinson

That what I was trying to remember

Atkinson, Potts and Tongue
McKinney I guess. I just think it needs a change now.

Love the lad but I think he needs a full year to learn batting myself hope they don’t pick him

Hear you. But I just have lost patience with Crawley.

Obviously if picked I hope he scores bucket loads.

Yeah no fair play

I guess that’s why I’m picking him, bethel isn’t there so we have to find someone

I don’t actually have a strong opinion on it despite what you may think ha

I kind of trust their judgement

Listened to sky sports podcast with Luke wright on today tho and he defs is playing I think

Btw someone noted that the only England player to play every game is pope, so not rested so far, which is interesting. I think he gets harshly treated on here but I wonder if he might miss out long term

Crawley has played every game no?

But it’s a good point, I think Pope does miss out long term

Based upon Luke Wright and Key's recent Sky Sports podcasts, there's no way they are dropping Crawley.

I personally would, and would be looking at Haines and Bohannon, it's too early for McKinney IMO but I'd have him on the radar for later in the summer and the winter if he has a good season. I think Lees is deserving of another crack too but won't happen.

Duckett
Haines
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Atkinson
Potts
Tongue
Leach

However I think Crawley will play, as will Bashir.

Chance they could go 4 seamers with Cook playing instead of a spinner. If Stokes isn't fit then you could pick Dawson to bat 6/7 and support the 4 seamers.

Good post only think I disagree with his Josh bohanon, I just can’t spell his name, don’t think hes a test cricketer myself

Haines is interesting, Key defs likes him.

This is my point shout McKinney, like I understand the argument about gettint players in test cricket early, but also sometimes a batsman batting 4 or 5 years in CC and learning how to bat and score 100s consistently is good and Haines is that

However I also agree that runs in April has very little relevance, in my opinion, to summer test pitches in England and Australia.

Even when the sun is out they are so slow, I can’t remember one decent bouncer all season so far. I love the CC but I don’t think runs in April has a massive say

Runs later in year tho when it’s quicker and faster, absolutely

Anyone going btw? I've got tickets for day 1.

I think I've gone for Bohannon purely on volume of runs in recent seasons so he's one that could go either way if tested. Haines has a more classical technique and certainly seems well suited to the step up. Both of them know how to make big scores on a pretty consistent basis, and I just feel Crawley has had plenty opportunities to cement his place and can't put together a consistent run of form.

He will play though, I'm certain of that.

Looks like he’s played all 3

Haha fair play knew you’d be on that

I heard it on wisden Pod maybe they meant teams that had played 4 thinking about it.

But anyway my point is I think pope is the most insecure, rightly or wrongly, that’s my instinct

I said last week, I cannot believe bethel took the cash from the IPL

India at home and Australia away, just like ski it, you are a kid, score a 100 for your county and potentially have the best year of your life. Badly advised on my opinion. A
