PAT Testing

OP wears a high vis jacket when putting his bins out and earplugs in while using the food blender.
Just done a load of quotes and it turns out about £2k is the going rate, unless you’re willing to hire the type of monster that puts sugar on his cornflakes.

One guy said he’d do it for £700 as it would only take “about an hour”. I said hold up buddy boy, this is not my first rodeo. You’re not coming round my house PAT testing with that sort of attitude.
You sound like a character off Alan partridge tbf.

Dya know what , thats not a bad shout at all if you can afford it . About a grand and it may save you ,your family or a neighbours life someday cos if your clock stops your almost certainly dead before an ambulance gets there . Puts your kettle fusing into perspective like .
There is one just over the road from my house.

We're lucky, we have 10 in our small village. Never really more than a few hundred yards away from one.

Yeah we have one in our village , that being said , there and back applying code etc would be at least 10 mins

Just spend the £2000 getting your consumer unit wiring etc to current regulation and use your electrical appliances with gay abandon knowing your safe.

I've just done this (changed from ancient wired fuses in a bakelite block!) and put in a couple of extra circuits and it cost less than half of that. You are correct though, with the RCBOs there is a good chance any faulty appliance would trip those. I didn't get all of my appliances PAT tested though, so I won't sleep tonight.

My electric keeps tripping randomly, doesn't trip anything on the RCD, just the main switch, it's totally random, can go 6 weeks without tripping the trip a couple of times for 2 days straight then perfect again.

Tends to happen during the night while we're in bed or while I'm out at work, so when usage is at its lowest.

It's impossible to even replicate, I put the dishwasher, washer, oven 2 airfyers and the kettle on and nadda, perfect.

Need to get a sparky in

I had a similar problem.

It was a worn out breaker.

They are electro-mechanical things and can wear out. The more it's tripping, the more it will wear.

A simple fix, just replace the breaker. £20 - £30. Probably about £100 for a sparky to come out and do it.

Been quoted £2k to get all electrical devices in the house PAT tested. Seems high to me, I do this every few years and I’m sure last time it was only £300-400, which is reasonable.

Anyone know anyone who can do this in East Boldon? Usually takes about a day, but provided the kettle is PAT tested first, you get unlimited cups of tea (not actually unlimited, accepting anymore than 3/4 teas is greedy and rude).
Christ. Talk about money for old rope.

Never even knew people bothered doing it for household appliances. Should never be more than a couple of hundred quid based on one man's day rate.

Ah, so this IS a wind up? I thought as much. Nobody would be stupid enough to get PAT done in their own homes unless they only had one "piece of mind" left.

Cheers 👍 it drove me nuts over the last few months isolating whole rooms, then individal sockets, everytime I sussed it it would stay on for several weeks then off again. Wanted to pinpoint a certain socket or appliance before I called a sparky to be told it'll be a full rewire then finding out it's a faulty gadget somewhere.
Just had to issue two safety non conformances to the mrs. She left a cardi on the back of her chair with an arm dangling down on the floor. There was a box left in our main escape route as well.

Just writing up the report now.
Have you had training and are signed off on wrighting up reports?

So sanity has prevailed as got a quote back for £365, which is more like it. Jerry and Tom are coming the day after next and will PAT test all my appliances.

You can’t be too careful in this game and for £365, I’ll sleep like a log knowing everything is safe and sound.
