Getting promoted - do we actually want it?

If we went up the wage bill would sore. The board want to keep costs low and sell players to fund the club every summer. We're a player farm not a sporting endeavour, Sadly some supporters are shell shocked from previous bad times that they think hovering around the play offs should be the extent of our ambitions too. Sad state of affairs.

Sums up my feelings perfectly.

I of course would love to see us play Wolves, Everton, Chelsea, Brighton, Manchester United and all the others. And the windfall we would receive in parachute payments be a huge source of income.

BUT I look at what the likes of Southampton and Leicester City and Sheffield United have to go through to get it and I don’t know if I want to experience that. Those three a part of the same merry-go-round of clubs that swap places every other season and grab all the parachute money. No doubt Burnley will get the same money they did at the end of last season when they go down next season. This constant stream of parachute money would help us enormously too like it’s helping them. But each season promoted teams are subject to the most horrendous criticism in the media and press. And other fans aren’t too enamoured with them either if you go on rival messages boards and HYS.

The fear of not going up isn’t because we lose the money, but because we lose the players. The fear of losing players like Jobe and Rigg and Ballard is worse than not going up itself to me. The horrible little doom-mongers on here have ensured that. All they ever talk about are the players leaving. Nobody ever wants to talk about the players who are staying because they are unable to. They don’t want to be that positive and optimistic.

This team has some talent but it is miles off being able to compete in the PL. I honestly wouldn’t mind another season in this league and letting the young players develop and hopefully continue to improve.

I’m not sure I would enjoy a season of getting battered like Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have had. Maybe these last few weeks are just sucking the life/positivity out of me.

How about we go up and receive massive amounts of money that will be much more useful to us than not having it.
 
I want us to get promoted as we need the money but I despise the premier league and everything about it. I’m not looking forward to getting hammered every week if we go up and the thoughts of playing the mags twice makes me feel ill, I daren’t even think how many they’d put past us 😖.
 
We need to go up for the money but it won’t be an enjoyable experience. We would be lucky to reach 10 points playing the way we do.

I think this is where I’m at to be honest, with my original post poorly constructed.

Obviously I want us to win the play offs like I want us to win every game and of course I want a repeat of the last play off win and the feeling that goes with it.

But going from winning more often than not like we did in the 1st half of this season to getting pummelled every week will be difficult as a supporter… though these past few weeks is good preparation.
 
We do need it, languishing about in the championship isn’t going to get us to the promise land. If we go up then chances are we’ll be embarrassed, but it’s a base to build from.

If it does happen then hopefully the parachute payments won’t be stolen this time.
 
If this current squad went up now and played in the premier league. We'd finish with less than 15 points but people on here seem happy for that to happen bizarre really
 
It’ll probably not be fun and we will lose most weeks, I can’t believe the fall off since that Leeds away game, it’s worth going up just for the money
 
Do we not want a fantastic weekend in London, our best Wembley occasion in 52 years. Do we want to lose a play off semi-final. Will our fans be cheering if Coventry win at our place ...
 
The owner’s ambition this season imo was making the playoffs. That was presumably articulated to Le Bris who achieved that target with weeks to spare.

If we took the next step and won the playoffs it’d mean a huge outlay on players, wages etc - let’s face it we’d need virtually a completely new squad to have any chance of avoiding a season of embarrassment- yes there’s a huge financial reward too but I just don’t see any evidence that our current owner thinks the club are ready for the premier league yet.

I genuinely think they’d prefer another couple of seasons of championship football with a view to gradually improving the squad to a point where the immediate outlay on players on gaining promotion wouldn’t be as enormous.

I don’t no.

Sure I’ll celebrate as much as anyone on the day. But in reality I have no interest being back in the PL. We’re likely to be breaking records for lowest points totals under this current ownership. That season will no doubt cause divides in the fan base, put off some fans, and probably remove the good will we have towards this young side - it’ll be absolute misery for a year.

I also hate going to 80% of PL games knowing you’ve lost already. Or celebrating a draw like it a win.

People say the club gets more money, but most of that goes to the players. I don’t get paid for promotion, in fac In reality our tickets will probably go up in price. So I’ll actually pay more to watch us lose.

Until we’re owned by someone with real financial weight behind us, ie a gulf state or a multi billionaire prepared to bankroll the club, I simply don’t fancy our chances in the PL and would much rather stick in a league where it’s exciting and unpredictable.

But that’s not how it works is it. I’ll just keep supporting them and see how it all ends up.

i'm not fussed. it'd be fantastic for the players, the club and the city but it's not particularly pleasant travelling watching us be whipping boys every week as has been the case not too long ago. i'd still go but i'd sooner go to oxford/bristol/blackburn on a wet tuesday night than anything the premier league has to offer.
i hate the premier league. the only reason i'd want to be in it would be for the derbies but that's tainted now with their owners.

i thought there was a cap on away fan ticket pricing? it used to be twenty's plenty didn't it although i might have heard it's £30 now. i could very well be wrong mind.

Yeah you’re right. Will actually be cheaper for away fans tbf. I just meant in terms of our home fans buying tickets. They'll no doubt increase match tickets
