Sunderland railway station.

The project cost 27 million I think , it didn't just get done up. The entire station was knocked down and built again.

The council have offered to help network rail find Tennant's for the units but nothing has happened yet

Hopefully get something sorted then.

With this confirmation now it sounds like its give them a kick up the arse to get this station up to standard as well as (hopefully) see some movement on the north end and 4 tracks come into play

Good news, baffles me why people would rather go through Newcastle to use the more expensive lner service

If it's ran by Network Rail can only imagine how much any rent would be to be in the station.
Monkwearmouth should have been redeveloped as the main station and transport hub. All the land is vacant round the back on the Sheepfolds.
Would be a bit daft having the main train station out of the town centre tho. Hopefully the main entrance proposed in the Mothercare building gets the go ahead.

The rent is online , I've seen the brochure, should be easy to find

Have the windows been cleaned? We should get an SMB flash mob turning up with a few buckets etc to do it and show what a poor reflection it is on those who run the place.
Load of British transport police would turn up and arrest everybody- dangerous sponge or something. Smash the toilets up or some graffiti nowhere to be seen.

North bridge street is an absolute clip which is the way the entrance would be facing. Nowt planned for there as far as I was aware. The whole street is an eyesore.
And even with the new footbridge, it wouldn’t exactly be the most hospitable walk for a lot of the year if you’re a visitor lugging baggage along or in your suit arriving in the city for business and having the wind and rain lashing off you coming in off the North Sea. Us football fans are used to it and don’t have bags or wear suits so that doesn’t compare either. City centre is finally improving so wouldn’t make sense longer term to take people away from it.

Just guessing but it could be reliability. I work in Northallerton so GC should be ideal for me to commute but the number of times the 15:17, 16:47, & 19:11 services to get home have all been cancelled is ridiculous. I've had to stop using them & drive insead.

Finally went into the new train station on good Friday, as we were going day drinking in Durham and thats whwre our lass booked the train tickets from. My god that new station is lifting.

No shops or vendors selling food or drinks, other than some machines I saw, although I didn't go over to look to see what they sold, the windows were minging, they've probably never been cleaned since they were installed. Then there was the scratters loitering around just outside, pissed at 12.05pm. 2 of them started screaming and shouting at each other and began booting each other to fuck. Then there was this pissed bloke with one leg in a wheelchair, wheeling around the station mouthing off at people while the lone security guard just stood playing on his phone.

Underground was worse, been years since I've been down by the tracks but what happened to the light display that looked like people walking? It looked like a chessboard with the damaged lighting and no wall animations.

In future I'll just go to seaburn station and avoid town all together. Shame on network rail for that shite.

IIRC I think it was determined that the platforms at Monkwearmouth are too narrow, and as it's listed it would be difficult to do anything with it.

Mothercare was up past M&S. Littlewoods had the building at the North End of the Station.
I can just vaguely remember walking thru the North End of the Station. Boots or Timothy Whites used to have a shop front in the street at the back of Fawcett St. I can just say remember the old bus station on the otherside of the station.
This is all before the bridges exsisted.

Isn’t it now a Poundland and something else? Has to be the most ugly building in the town that.

Underground could have been a million times better. Fantastic opportunity to move the offices or whatever they are up to ground level. There is the waiting area with the metal seats imagine you find in a prison and then "squeezed" onto a metre of the platform. Must be the very minimum network rail will allow, you are very close to the track. Getting rid of the daylight was criminal but loads of underground stations the same and are better than Sunderland. The open design, lends itself to anti social behaviour. Almost encourages the kids to use it as an indoor football area. I tend to get off at Park Lane if on the metro , find the station too annoying, want to get hold of someone from network rail and give them a shake.

Agreed!

However, it’s a much more pleasurable experience going via Newcastle,
▫️you’ll definitely be able to use the
▫️ if you’re disabled, you’ll be able to have access to the platforms.

These aren’t guaranteed at Sunderland, which is an absolute disgrace for a city of our size.

That one legged bloke in the wheelchair is a menace
I’ve heard him mouthing off to his so called mates
He’s like a modern day two wheeled fagin
