Gorgo (1961)

Jesus, this film stinks… it’s so bad even the Guttenberg would be struggling to accept the role. A bloke in a dodgy looking monster outfit tramples over London… as I’m watching (on one of those old films channels on Sky), it’s smashed Tower Bridge….

I’m sitting thinking somebody should have just brought a big stick of Chewits on a lorry to calm it down 🤣

I like Gorgo! Good memories from when I watched it as a kid.

Watched Godzilla Vs Hedora yesterday, total crap. Can't believe I used to love these, still good for comedy value I suppose. Even my 10 year old walked in and said that looks crap, lol at those graphics

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974) 7/10
Watched in tribute to director Ted Kotcheff, who died this month aged 94. Richard Dreyfuss doing his thing as a young Canadian Jewish man on the make. Denholm Elliott delivers his standard 'endearing alcoholic' performance. Not bad, nothing special.

Funeral in Berlin (1966) 8/10
Classic spy thriller with Michael Caine at his coolest. The plot's a bit ropey, but the authentic Berlin locations make up for that.

Prince of the City (1981) 8/10
Very long, very dry account of a whistleblower in the NYPD, directed by Sidney Lumet. A lot hinges on Treat Williams, who is on screen for most of the running time. It's a patchy performance. Truly great at times, but at others - especially his monologues - he does a fair amount of self-indulgent acting.

A Working Man,

Was disappointed this wasn’t the art house film of Jason Statham playing bricks for 90 minutes.

I want everyone to see it just to laugh at the moon as much as I did
Jason Statham does the same film every time with a different title. Good brain-free fodder sometimes though and will watch that tonight I reckon

I love all the old Godzilla films, as a young ‘un in the 1970s and in the 80s I think I must have seen every one of them.

Mind you, I still like all the black and white 1940s, 50s (and beyond) monster stuff… Them! It Came From Beneath The Sea, The Swarm, etc

By most standards they are shite. But they possess a certain context and atmosphere, and tap into nostalgia. I’ve got them all, plus loads of other Toho, Toei and Daiei films.

The American stuff from the 40s to the 70s is great to watch. Sometimes I like nothing more than watching 90 minutes of black and white cheesy sci-fi trash.

There was one, which I didn’t finally get around to watching until around five years ago, was The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) … I was blown away by the whole thing, the story, the cinematography, the huge sets. I was also pulled into the way the story ended.

Same here! I could easily get behind a Gorgo or Valley Of Gwangi remake!
I must admit however that I did re-watch Gorgo a few months back (first time in around 40 years), and it wasn't quite as I remembered 🤣 (Still fun though).

Twisters
I wasn't a fan of the original and figured this would be more of the same.
It was definitely better than I expected, I just wish they'd gone for a higher certificate, I know its a family film but this kind of chaos lends itself to splattery mayhem!

Amazes me they never remade Valley of the Gwangi.

Good film. I rewatched the 1958 version of The Fly recently and it’s a neat little film. Far more downbeat than I recall.

I’ve got a Blu Ray of Gorgo which uses a decent print. Most of the ones shown on tv are blurry. The destruction of buildings on Gorgo is quite nicely done for the era.

Gwangi is fabulous. The elephant bit used to upset me as a kid. So did a similar bit in 20 Million Miles to Earth. Harryhausen liked knacking elephants.

Just read an absolute abomination of an article on IGN about The Ten Commandments (the DeMille remake of his own film).

A masterpiece that’s been in my top 5 since I was a bairn, I’m most put out.
