He just gives you a different option, he's got a classical technique and will play more patiently whilst the ones around him are more attacking by nature. Looking at it now, Gay certainly is not an improvement.

The only thing I’d say about the captaincy is that the lack of spinner, Hoggs injury combined meant lees has nowhere too turn

Doggett was poor 2nd innings so I did feel for the captain a bit he had to mix it up just using Potts and Raine

Parky would have held an end, he should have played

Well the Hogg thing was ridiculous. The lads was hobbling about and we then made him bowl :lol: we couldn't believe it. Potts bowling short stuff mid afternoon and not a fielder near the bat was confusing as was the field settings before the new ball. Hopefully we improve soon but it wasn't great

He’s also proper Durham and we lack a bit of that sometimes

Im just not convinced we’ve signed massive upgrades But I’ll certainly give them a chance and 2 games is not much

So we were down to 3 and no spinner

You have to try things with the limited options you have

Doggett may not have been convincing but still got wickets I like Scott but his batting had fallen well off

I get that, but all I'm saying is that the club may not necessarily have replaced him with better but I do think both Gay and Rhodes are decent cricketers and will show better than what we've seen so far.

Potts seemed to be bowling a lot of short stuff in their first innings too.

This win or bust approach is fine if you are up the top but we are bottom and need points on the board now, some 13-14 point draws may be needed real soon and generous declarations like last nights may have to stop in the short term. 3 batters are in serious bad knick and we have gone for 3 sizable scores bowling so far. I felt last night we had a chance to guarantee a draw at worst if Potts and Hogg had batted the day out with runs flowing whilst still giving us time to win, two defeats is a concern, we cant afford three.
 
Sadly we have produced a lot of good fast bowlers but no even an average spinner plus other than Brown many moons ago not a left seamer either.

Without the extra pace or Carse and Wood our attack is a bit samey.

The side looks unbalanced at the moment have to see how they go. But Gay and Rhodes look nothing special so far.

Plus Gays fielding has been dire and cost us dearly so far.

This is true, but at 35 as a batsman he should have 3 good years in him and perhaps more.
I really don't get what happened to him. My theory was that at Surrey he changed his style to be less classical if you like and more open to (I think) make more room to play the shots that short form cricket demands. If you remember as good as he was as a red ball cricketer he was never a big hitter in T20. ----- But if that's true why didn't he simply change back? There's a very good player in there somewhere. It's a shame we haven't seen it lately.

His prime was when he played with Diva at Durham and his beginning with Surrey when Diva was his batting coach.Probably too late now but I reckon Diva could and would have identified and rectified the problem,even though a video link.

Gay eventually began to look good in the first innings before he lost patience and chased after a wide one, whereas Rhodes has had a lousy start to his Durham career in every dept and I do mean every dept. I also think we might have signed at least one of them with the possibility of losing McKinney to England in mind

If Bedders is out for Friday (and he probably is) then I suppose we could move Rhodes to 4 (or 3 and move Gay to 4) to see if that makes a difference to his fortunes. Ackers was excellent at 4 v Notts, but we also know he can bat lower down. Does Robbo need to drop to 6 or even 7 until he gets his mojo back?

I always thought that Cambo made a big deal about always playing a front line spinner, so I have no idea why we didn't have one here. I get why Old George got the gig at TB over Parky, he had an impressive pre-season, so one of them needs to come in for Hogg on Friday. I'm not fussed which

Lees had some interesting field placings when I was there on Saturday, which I didn't mind seeing, so he must have some ideas swirling around. I can't really remember the last time I saw us have 2 regularly close in fielders that didn't include short leg. Gay's catch to remove Davies was a stunning reaction catch.

His batting form was horrible and he didn't seem too arsed about correcting the weaknesses.

However he had become a good captain under Campbell after a disappointing tenure under Franklin. Captaincy also seems to have affected Lees' batting this season.

Don’t think he’s that bad now, last year he was getting loads of starts but not kicking on, which csn happen

Was pure class for the seconds last week

I just don’t think he should give it up meself, look at Rocky, some tough years lately but gets a gig at Hampshire as he still has the drive

I think horrible is a bit harsh smoker, got lots of starts, certainly games I was at, unless I’m misremembering

I don’t think Lees is a natural captain myself
