Not sure what he’s done to deserve anything close to what Brighton are paying tbh. 7 or so games with a couple of good performances.

I’m critical of the club as much as anyone, but I’m glad they’ve not let a teenager who’s done next to nout, and his tosser of a father in law, hold the club to ransom.

They wouldn’t give him what he wanted so he’s chosen to leave.

I think Watson has let Sunderland fans and RLB down for sure. Watson has some plans first team route and he decided to fuck off to Brighton. His head turns when that damn Harte brainwashed him.

Negotiations have been going on for ages and he was wanted in January, the deals have been agreed so whilst the timing isn't great, it was all pretty much out in the open anyway, so why try and pretend it isn't happening?

indeed. Pontentially a forgotten man in that team. Im sure Brighton will look elsewhere. They got so many wingers. I dont understand why Watson decided to go there. Very bad move this.
 
I am a little worried that we sometimes seem to have trouble negotiating new contracts

Clarke, Watson, potentially Neil and Cirkin. The club did well to get Rigg to sign on, but if he doesn’t go anywhere this summer then his will probably need extending to give the club security. That will be a tough negotiation where the player undoubtedly holds all the cards.

I’m all for wage structure but they may have to try pushing the boat out a little more if we’re to hold onto our top talents, or at least be in a position to get decent fees for them.
 
We are built and are bound to lose the players we develop. It’s what the club wants in fact. It’s far from ideal and the timing of the announcement is stupid but it’s something we have to get used too. Money and premier league teams will come calling often for our young talent. We move on as always

The club aren't ambitious enough to keep up with players careers. These lads will think they're good enough for the premier league. And we want ambitious players like that, you have to accept players will move on unless you'd rather we'd full of cloggers

It's all a fine balance isn't it. There's an element of squad harmony to take into account too, you dish out a bumper contract to keep a player like Ross Stewart on 35k for example, then the rest of the squad will want parity.

As it is now, there'll not be a lot between any of the first team imo, and they'll be trying to find the balance. Whether they can or not remains to be seen. Until we're promoted we won't see the wage structure change much, but we'll have some players who will think they've outgrown what we can offer.
 
Just because Watson, or any other player, refuses to sign a contract doesn’t mean we made a crap offer or we pay crap wages. It’s a fine balance. The club offer what they think he’s worth. Would anyone rather we went back to the days of Ndong, Kone, rodwell….. where we end up paying top wages for dire performances to players with no motivation to move on. Thankfully we now seem to be renewing the contracts of our first team squad and young prospects with 18 months left on their existing contracts. If they won’t renew we have time to move them on for good money. Our deals for Stewart, Clarke and Watson are a world away from Sunderland a few years back.

I just think if he's good enough for development at a top 10 PL club then his value should have been a lot more than £10m.

All the traitor / loyalty talk is wrong though, it's a dream move for him and it's our fault if we didn't negotiate a better deal for him.
