Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

I thought Watson has had 2 good games for us

Stoke home
Sheff U away

The rest of the time he’s been distinctly average at best, and usually well below average.

He’s only 18 so obviously has a lot of potential, but £10m now for a lad refusing to sign a new deal who’s not mentally wanting to stay here is good business.
Even that game, people raved about him, but watching in the pub, I didn't think he was all that. He ran at them, and that was about it. I still think he shoulda squared to Rigg, then we wouldn't have been talking about Roberts missing the penalty. I thought the Sky commentary (was it Hendrie perhaps) going well OTT about his performance did him a lot of favours. His end product was nowt.

It sorta put me in mind of Will Buckley running at Man Utd, and everyone thinking he was wonderful afterwards.

Nah, Watson had a good game v Sheff U imo.

Aye, his decision making should have been better but you could say that about half of our team that game. Watson won us the penalty too if I remember correctly.
Eee gerraway, a 21 year old with a couple of seasons more experience has been better than an 18 year old with a handful of games played in his career? Who'd a thunk
Much better, aye.

It’s not just about the ability, it’s about attitude on the pitch.

Mundle since his long lay off has been pressing and getting stuck in. Watson on the other hand barely sprints anymore.

He’s had the thought of this move in his head ever since the window closed, so wouldn’t risk another injury. I don’t blame him for it but it doesn’t help us when he’s on the pitch.

There’s some embarrassing post and massive over reaction on here mind.

Watson has never asked to leave however he felt the club massively undervalued him especially how much they’ve bigged him up.

He’s on life changing money at Brighton who had already had 2 bids accepted last summer and January and the club both times stopped the deal at the last minute first time no idea why second time we all know why.

The club haven’t handled it at all well and had the club offered somewhere near what TW was wanting he would’ve signed a new contract.

Can’t blame the lad and wish him all the best.

He hasn’t signed just to be loaned back out and for the under 23’s either, he’ll be on the bench and around the first team squad. Brighton rate him massively.

A lot going on about his recent form he’s just come back from 4 months out where he had a broken bone. It takes a good few weeks to get going again for some players.

Its the only way. In this league without selling players we lose money and would fall foul of the rules if we don't sell players. We are in a better position than all but those with parachute payments but we cant not sell and try to improve weaker areas of the squad.
Of course it’s the only way! Or did Ipswich find an alternative?

He did win the pen... but he shoulda squared it to Rigg.

I'm not saying he didn't have a good game, I just thought the reaction was way OTT. It wasn't that good a game. I know it's not all about assists and goals, but he didn't assist (should have done) and he didn't score.

Mundle grafts his bollocks off. Me brother had a bit of a twist at him on Saturday asking what's he doing as he struggled to get goal side as he harried his man. And I said he's tracking his man. Harrying him. He may not have won the ball but he stopped the lad in his tracks, and it's a lot more than you get from some wingers.

Agreed with this.

Easily embarrassed then!

Bit strange that considering they have Minteh, Pedro, Mitoma and Adringa who can play in that position within their current squad. They also have Enciso, Buononatte and Sarmineto all out on loan, who have done more than Watson have in the respective leagues this season.

That’s what he’s been advised by Brighton.

I’d expect one of them will be leaving in the summer

It'll depend on Watson when he gets down there and how his pre season goes before Brighton will have any plans on if he's in the first squad or not. He'll have to impress, and up his game massively to be a contender for their bench let alone a start.

So far Brighton have bought the prospect of a good player. I suspect his journey may be a bit tougher than the verbal agreement he has with his new club.

Long time lurking Brighton fan here. (I think I've posted before)

If the last 10 years are anything to go by, our club is probably planning for 2027 or even 2028 with this signing. We rarely buy "squad ready" players for £10m. Minteh and Pedro were £35m players, Mitoma and Adingra were bought cheaply and then immediately loaned to USG for a season or 2 before coming back. The other three are interesting ones - they were all also bought cheaply and I think the club hopes to get a return on investment but will cut its losses if not. Enciso is a bit of a nob - he'll be in and around the squad, invariably being sloppy for several games running when he comes on (he doesn't look after the ball IMO). Then he'll score a worldie and we'll get 2 weeks of unsettling bollocks from his agent. Buonanotte is decent but not quite good enough for a starting spot at a club aiming for Europe regularly - he's knuckled down and done the business at Leicester (until horse-face turned up and showed what a shit manager he is). Sarmiento is a small step down from Buonanotte but has a good attitude and I suspect will be sold to a promoted club eventually (so hopefully not Burnley where he is now).

Anyway, I think I disagree with @Dan The Man if he thinks the player is going to walk straight into our squad. I mean he might do, but I'd be surprised. We've had kids like Evan Ferguson and Jack Hinshelwood step up from a young age, but at 18 I'd be amazed if he wasn't eased into the squad over the course of 1 or 2 seasons.

I mean it’s not like clubs to lie mind 😂 I’ll be shocked if he makes more than five appearances in the premier league. Like others have said they have a fair few that can play in that position and are way ahead of where he is atm. Can see him being involved in squads till the winter window then loaned out to a championship side.

Yep. Smart money on Mitoma. We'll get loads for him, and the club buying him will probably overpay. He's unplayable about 4 times a season, a very good Premier League winger 70% of the time and marked out of the game the rest. Those Chelsea or Tottingham muglets will probably pay about £150m and then ruin him.

This might come across as bitterness but I mean it genuinely. He's clearly behind Mundle right now at Sunderland so it would make sense that you'll have at least 2 or 3 players ahead of him.
