Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

Compensation always seems less in arbitration that what you can potentially get from someone purchasing a player. Also means you can add additional terms like sell on clause etc. Watson is backup, and played minimal time (granted still in and around squad when fit) but its completely different to Rigg or jobe who have played pretty much week in week out all season. We don't know the conversations that have been had but perhaps this was the best solution that could be agreed. I will happily complain about a lot of things. I just think this is something not to get too worked up over
I’m not that fussed about him going mate it’s the timing. What if mundle pulls up before the playoffs. Will this lad give his all?. Fans are going to be thinking all of this. It’s just a really daft thing to announce weeks before the biggest period of our season.

Very true, what they are paying for is potential, pay peanuts for him now could be worth treble in a couple of years , if we were in the prem we wouldn’t even entertain this deal, look at dybling 100m they are asking for him. It’s thinking like a bog standard championship team that sells therur best youth to the prem , see qpr eze, Millwall esse now us, sad state of affairs.

It’s more the amount for me than anything we never seem to get top dollar.
It does seem on the low side if it's £10m, but if he'll not sign a contract, we don't have much choice but to take what we can get. I'm guessing, like Clarke that there's only the one team in for him, so it's kind of take it or leave it.

As a Sunderland kid to do this as we are trying for promotion isn’t great but you have to question the clubs ambition.

We should be all pulling in the right direction to get promoted.
What if the players know Watson wants away and isn’t committed .
What if this wasn’t out there and Reggie chose not to pick him ? Or did pick him and he looked dis interested ?
Also imagine the latter and young players who would bust a gut -Aleksic Jones not getting game time but Watson was thoughts ?

The players I think he means mate. It’s nowt new announcing over seas signings. And I don’t care how it effects some team in some league miles away.

Aye, Chelsea buying (not selling one of their first team squad) 2 lads from Porto isn't the same thing as what we're talking about at all here.

It's a really bad effort by chunkyshitehawk tbh.

No difference really to a player signing a pre-contract agreement really (if anything you could argue that's worse)

But Brighton are buying so it is equivalent they're both English teams purchasing youth players early

Although we will be offering significantly less than Brighton, I do find it very strange that a lad from a Sunderland supporting family, who has been with the club since the age of 6, has so quickly decided to leave.
It’s the model plus I’m not that bothered about him tbh. A few good games but genuinely looks weak as piss ( I know he will hopefully put stronger as he gets older but that’s no guarantee)

A chance to say he’s played for a premier league team al be it very limited and a huge signing on fee plus pay rise .

True , it’s about taking risk and reward, he has 18 months , we can still go to the prem, could we convince him with more time . However, the timing is laughable during a play off push, the lad now will most likely get booed.

I really don’t understand the pull of Brighton. Soulless club that will inevitably drop back down.

Let’s just call it what it is, a move for money, which is fine.
I can and players obviously do, they bring players in, give them a platform to perform and players know they don't stand in their way to move on. It's a nice part of the world and they are premier league, clearly paying premier league wages

But you won't care how it affects other English teams either. That wasn't his point, he said it doesn't happen but it clearly does.

Man City announced haaland was joining them during the season
If Burnley just announced they’d sold one of their first team squad or another of our playoff rivals I’d be happy in that it has a chance to weaken them. It’s very strange to announce it now we all knew he’d probably be away just like rigg and jobe and one or two others but to announce any of them weeks before the playoffs is just rank bad. I’d be saying the same thing if it were Burnley sheff Utd Leeds or any others we may meet in the playoffs.

Yep ,not that arsed but he has to be frozen out now ,
I'd go as far as say don't come into training, he's off and won't give his all ,even if he thinks he is
Won’t tackle or get stuck in. Can’t imagine Brighton want him playing either. Needs to be as far away from the club as possible,

Probably had little choice, the club paying over £10m probably had some say

Why would they have had so little choice?

Do the deal with Brighton, tell Watson he's on his way and it'll be made official in the summer. No drama. Is he moving to Brighton tomorrow?....nope.

I'm not bothered that he's going, it's a good price, but it's just been really poorly handed by putting it in the public. If folk can't see how it'll cause negatives until the end of the season, then there's no real point in trying to state the obvious to them.

It took him months to sign a pro deal at 17. He's been itching to get away

It definitely feels that way mate.

Obviously I don’t know what has gone on behind the scenes but even if the club were offering say £1500 a week (plus all the usual bonuses) that would still be a very good deal for a 18 year old.

I can’t see Brighton offering huge wages, so he’s quite possibly left a pretty safe environment for him to develop (a set up he knows etc) for perhaps an extra £200k a year after tax? Seems a risk imo as if he struggles, he will quickly get peddled
He’s clearly motivated by money and that’s more important to him than playing for his local club.

He’s not going to get many minutes at Brighton, and will probably end up on loan in the championship anyway.

And as @JJH has just posted, he gets to say he is/was a premier league player.

Aye but that's another different point mate. He said it doesn't happen.

Whether we agree with announcing it or not, it's clearly does happen at times.
