SAFC Milk Cup Heroes Reunite For 40th Anniversary Celebration

Just listening too the it was what it was podcast with David corner. Was only three in 85 so that final I can’t remember. I’m guessing it was his mistake that cost us?. Monkwearmouth lad, did he get stick after that they are saying he was pretty much hounded after that game?.

This game also helped sway me I think to become a Sunderland supporter. But it wasn't till 1995 when I think I decided I want to fully support Sunderland. It was the 1992 FA Cup Final was the big push toward being a supporter. Had neither happened I dare say I would be celebrating winning the EFL Cup (which is a big of a misnomer since an EFL club has not won it for years) now.

Bit if you asked me to name the oldest players I can remember whereas some can probably remember Jim Baxter I only go as far back as Colin West, Nick Pickering and Chris Turner.

I have very mixed emotions over the description as heroes

It was a relegation season and a lot of that was down to the players completely packing in after the final defeat

The thing is we started the season so well and included one of the all time greats beating man United 3-2 from 2-0 down

For the young uns out there it was £5 to get into the old tunnel end at the old Wembley all standing

IIRC it only cost a £5 for the bus down which I caught at Park Lane

Still this was for an excellent cause and I’m glad it was a success

The issue of heroes or not is by the by and how it was promoted, though Chris Turner deserves the tag for certain and I love Benno.

It's something I'd have liked to attend because that cup run was full of drama and excitement in a painful season, any fan around at the time has theories and questions about the final and supporting a football club for most of us is about more than the actual match. The stories of players who have worn our shirt can be fascinating, Davie Corner's tale alone should be heard. They were also the reason why I got to see Sunderland at Wembley for the first time and that's worth something.
