To be honest why is Neil singled out here?

Jobe and Rigg especially have been absolutely dog shit this year, Rigg beyond that, he's been absolutely woeful for ages. Yet you go out on a limb to dig Neil out specifically?

All three haven't been good enough and show why you shouldn't lack a good base of quality experience for an extended period.

That is one of the benchmarks of a good midfielder. Taking the ball under a lot of pressure and looking after it. Losing the ball all the time isn’t really an attribute or link to being a good midfielder

Yeah ok fairly often was not the phrase I should have used, I more meant it isn’t gonna come off every time, but because you’re in those positions it’s more notable when you lose it.

Specific direct question. I don't see you singling the other younger players out (something you never do) despite their absolutely dire performances over a longer period.

You even stuck up for players like Ba and George Dobson, the former who was f***ing useless in terms of the basics. Hence I'm asking directly as apart from a slow start this season and a few average and poor performances recently Neil has been generally a better performer.


I think Neil will be a Barry Bannan btw. He might get a PL move, he might not. but I'd probably have him down for player of the season at the moment. I dont think I need to reevaluate what he'll become. Unfortunately he'll likely be the level we've been througout most of my lifetime.

He was physically shot at any decent level by then. His ability kept him going the following season but he could no longer run.

But Cattermole was a more able footballer than Neil. It’ll get howls of derision on here I’m sure but Cattermole was a genuine top flight footballer from the age of 17 until the end of his 20s. I’m not sure Neil’s career will stack up the same

I expect more from Neil than I do Rigg, I should expect more from Roberts but what can you do. I'll criticise a young player if I feel they don't have the potential to play for us. Rigg outworking the pair despite being very poor today and for a good while is what stands Dan out today imo.

I'm not sure what Ba or Dobbo has to do with it.

Then your evaluation will be fine if that happens, I and others felt he could be a prem player but it doesn't appear to be materialising hence my question.

I'm not sure why it would be howled at, Lee was undoubtedly a better footballer at same age, that would be hard to debate, I think I just expected Neil to have pushed a bit further by this point and we'll beyond performances like today.

What does that prove though?

Kevin Kilbane played 13 seasons of PL football to Julio Arca's 7 or so. He wasn't more talented and in certain areas neither was Cattermole compared to Neil. Physically amd how he could put that onto the pitch though Cattermole was a different animal.

Kilbane played 60+ more games at the top level than Kevin Phillips.

Dan Neil is still a lovely footballer and one of our better players this season. He may not be making the progress some suggest he should, but he's still one of our better players- WTF is a comparison to a player be bought in the PL for the PL and given a contract to of over 30k per week in his time here about?

The only reason I brought him into it was that I think Neil is a similarly effective player at this level to what Cattermole was at the level above.

Breaks up play well and can pass the ball very nicely. Is capable of outstanding performances at the level but has some shockers as well.

My fault for derailing the thread a little bit my making the comparison.

Can’t see the point in picking anyone out.
He was well off his game but so was everyone else… why do we think that is as he has been our most consistent player for 2-3 months

I don't think it's strange. I'll back those I feel deserve backing, Neil has been one many times. I'll say someone was garbage when I think they have been. As he was today, our joint worst with a player I don't expect anything from.

Fair enough, I did, hence the thread. That was beyond bad, I expect better of him personally and he's captain.

Evening mate. Rose tinted glasses regarding Cattermole IMO. He had two purple patches each lasting a handful of games in his entire time here. Man City and Wigan games spring to mind. Back end of Bruce's time and beginning of O'Neil's time here? Did nowt after signing a long contract and being stripped of the captaincy. Having said that it was in the top flight so I'll not press you. ;)
