Champions Trophy 2025

The saddest thing is the lack of surprise.
This for me, went to sleep when they got past 250, thought they will 100% get a score that our batters will crumble chasing (bar Root).
Woke up, went to youtube for highlights and the first one showed them celebrating - spoilers...not really.
SA will pummel us, so maybe better off without a sticking plaster win against the so called lesser team. there is nowhere to hide after today.
Going to Asia with a single aging spinner man.

No surprise we are shite in 50 over cricket now we have completely devalued our domestic 50 over competition.

Bazball seems to be wearing a bit thin too, there's no adaptability to match situations and different conditions. I don't think anyone has particularly improved as a cricketer under this regime, they don't refine technical weaknesses they just tell them to hit the ball as far as they can and it's fine if it doesn't work.

I thought in both games we lost by been poor in the back end of games.

Against the Aussies should have scored more in the final overs and our bowling could not stop them at the back end.

Different but similar today no way should they have got to 325 after the start they had our bowling at the back end of the innings terrible.

Ironically for all the talk of just attack attack and no adapting to the game situation we have actually done that with our batting in these two games and played more traditionally and brought back Root into the side to do just that

However our bowling been horrendous imo, think it was a big mistake to put pace as a priority over accuracy with our bowling.

A good time to bring up Strauss and Key's target for England to be the "world's best team across all formats within five years, for a sustained period of time".

Not really going to plan is it lads.

50/50 has not been devalued.

The players have devalued it by opting to earn a 100 contract instead of playing for their counties.

We I take it you mean the ECB???

England Players can play for their counties in 50/50 domestic cup.

They choose not to not the ECB.

50 over cricket has been devalued worldwide imo.

Rightly or wrongly it has happened with the rise of T20 cricket.

They will undoubted have been gently cajoled by the ECB to prioritise the 16.4, not least with greater financial incentive.

Just like Top Indian white ball cricketers will have been cajoled to be playing in the IPL, top South African players in the SA20 and top Aussies in the Big Bash etc etc.

It is a problem granted that top international cricketers play too much T20 as opposed to 50 over cricket.

But this problem is not solely down to the ECB it really isn’t.

Reading some posts on here you would think we doing badly because other countries really value their domestic 50 over competition and we don’t, when imo that not the case.

South Africa even did not send there best players to a test series to get their short format competition of the ground.
The SA 20 first year

Yep , however the BCCI would have played a big hand in the last para as they fund the SA20

True but there is no other country which is running another domestic competition concurrently and giving that one priority.
That’s because all other countries have their franchise tournament again rightly or wrongly as a priority over 50 years over competition and don’t have another 20 over competition taking up the calendar.

So is it in fact the domestic blast competition taking up the calendar that means the 50 over competition less competitive.

But that’s a whole another debate!!

As if we had one short format major franchise competition like other countries there would be more time for a proper 50 over competition.

However it would be still marginalised as the top players would play franchise competitions throughout the world as they do in other countries

The bottom line again rightly or wrongly 50 over cricket worldwide is not seen as a priority domestically

My original point still stands
I reckon the 1980s Durham side would have walked a format of the present 50 over competition.
😀

As would the Somerset side of the early 80s Garner,Richards,Botham,Rose, Roebuck and co.

And imo were better than the Durham side ;)

Not sure off your point?

50 over cricket in them days domestically was treated as more of a priority nowadays sadly it’s not.

But it is not solely a move in England it has been a gradual process everywhere.

My point is quite simple but I'll repeat it. I agree 50 over domestic cricket is on the wane everywhere but Englands domestic one is the least competitive because it has another competition running concurrently with it which it gives priority. That has to have a negative effect on development in this format

Well there is only one thing to do about it, have one major franchise competition like ever other single country does so they not running concurrently??

All that will mean of course is that our best players ( like other countries do) will not play in it as too many franchise and international cricket played nowadays.
