Tom Banton

I see he has been called up to replace Bethell in the Champions Trophy

How utterly shoddy that we’ve picked someone who hasn’t played a ODI since 2020, or even a T20i since 2022

Do they not do any prep at all?

Edit: he hasn’t played a 50 over game/List A since 2020 either

Not exactly a like for like replacement for Bethell.

It means England's Champions trophy squad contains 4 keepers (5 if you want to include Duckett), yet only 1 allrounder. I also find it odd that for a tournament in the sub-continent we've gone for 6 seamers and only 3 spin options (Rashid, Livingstone and Root).

Rash can't have many more tourneys in him. Been a class servant, I wish we had his replacement lined up. But you're right like. 1 spinner and 2 batters who bowl spin isn't the options you'd like to see in the sub continent.

Playing him at 6 when he didn't work as a middle order batsman last time is just stupid.

If they were going to go for Livingstone as second spinner who isn't good enough at that job. They should have picked Hain at 4 with Brook 5 and Buttler 6.

We were so good under Morgan because of the openers setting it up and then him and Root would set it up in them middle orders. Hain is better suited to the tempo you need in the middle orders.

Picking him for 50 over cricket when he hasn’t even played domestic 50 over cricket is ridiculous.

Looked a talent when he started, maybe he still is, but come on….

That will be an issue for whoever we pick though. You'll find very few England standard players who have played a List A game outside of England since 2020.

Even Hain who'd I'd pick has played I think 2 games since then both for England just before 2023 World Cup.

Its an issue around the world too it's why the world cup was shite as so many sides couldn't pace their innings. The difference is we shoehorned a brand new format into the calendar to degrade our 50 over competition and the others didn't.

Aussies did well in the World Cup as they basically had their test team so the leap of trying to play more measured innings wasn't beyond them. Head practically plays ODI cricket in test cricket so was well suited to pace him game. We try to play a T20 game instead of just playing how we do in test cricket.

He hasn’t played list a games IN England

I meant outside of playing for England.

I.e not played for their counties. Salt for example hasn't played a List A game for Lancs since 2019.

I doubt a single player in the England squad has let alone just Salt.
