Style of Play

I think it is purely the lack of investment in proven quality players, simple as that. Regis has done as well as he can but unfortunately, some clubs in this division have more experience and strength in depth than we have.

I honestly thought we might have put a bit more effort into the January window. Pushed the boat out and given it a real shot of promotion. To not bring in an extra forward, ready to make an impact in games like Plymouth and Watford at home is disappointing.

Bad injuries and a reluctance to use fringe players for more than 5 minutes might cost us

Mayenda in particular had a lot less game time than I think he deserved after his good start.

Auchiche was perfectly fine for the games he played... Should have been used a lot more.

Aleksic looks a handful

In the Jack Ross season we ended with 22 wins and 19 draws, we aren’t going to be far off that come the end of this season.

Currently on 16 wins and 11 draws.

When RLB came in, the first month saw us blow teams away with the high press, powerful and clinical counter attacking.

What's happened? What's changed?

Started to drop off in November and then I thought start of the year when RLB went 4-4-2, we would see it return but hasn't materialised.

Mind he's still done a very good job as the league position doesn't lie but can't help feel like the style of play has regressed.

We've also dropped a lot of points as well, lack of subs or negative subs and sitting back to invite unnecessary pressure.
4 wins and 3 draws from our last 7 league games mate. That is 98-99 pts a season form.

Something changed, we got just 3 points less in our first 12 games than we have in the 19 since. Only 31 points in 19 games is why we are 4th and not in the top two. Don't get me wrong, we are doing better than I thought we would but after such an impressive start it still manages to feel a little disappointing

Where do we lack depth? We've got 2 or 3 players in every single position. We lack reliably fit players, not depth
We definitely lacked depth relative to top 4 sides early in the season. And not having players available because they are persistently unfit means you lack depth.

Was it not due to a combination of things.
Alese got injured and our super high defensive line went away.
It was almost certainly decided we didn’t have the depth to push as hard as we did all season.
It’s the easiest way to get the whole stadium behind the team as well. Said it for years. We love a high press, work rate and hard tackling.
Part of me thinks we’ve approached a lot of games the wrong way by trying to keep everything ticking over at 80% and then having to dig deep at the end. Rather than blow teams away and then replace at the end.

Good point re. Alese. I hadn’t considered him that key but we don’t have any real pace at the back without him.

The manic pressing that was on show in the first few weeks was never going to be sustainable over a full season but we've often gone too far the other way since then.
Secure playoff spot, if autos are out of the question, start resting key players and aim to bring back the manic press for 3 games to end the season in glory

Not seeing any particular style of play like except sitting back 2nd hallves, tjem.ending up chasing the game late on.
May as well just lump the ball up for Misidor to run on to, forget midfield.

Not strength in depth. The top 3 have a stronger squad than us.

Here's why.

Le Bris has done a fine job. As have the recruitment team.
This is always going to be the case though. So do we never plan to get promoted again?

End of the day , for this season , are we really top 2 material....imo we never have been .......we are exceeding in being a play off candidate and although the sides above are not exactly wonderful, they currently have that bit extra with experince etc. So we have to accept that getting anywhere near 80 points this season will be a tremedous effort.
