Style of Play

NorthumberlandMackem

Central Defender
When RLB came in, the first month saw us blow teams away with the high press, powerful and clinical counter attacking.

What's happened? What's changed?

Started to drop off in November and then I thought start of the year when RLB went 4-4-2, we would see it return but hasn't materialised.

Mind he's still done a very good job as the league position doesn't lie but can't help feel like the style of play has regressed.

We've also dropped a lot of points as well, lack of subs or negative subs and sitting back to invite unnecessary pressure.

Nothing has changed. We're unbeaten at home and 4th in the league. When we're good we can get very very good. But the squad still lacks the depth of the top 3.

We've done that well the fear of losing has crept in and he's went ultra safe and boring to try and grind out the play offs / automatics.

Its working but it's an absolutely hard and brutal watch most weeks. You'll struggle to find a game where we've played well for the full game or have started well.

It was never sustainable over a 46 game season with no depth. We always needed to find another way of gaining points and we have. There will probably be two teams better than us this year due to them having more resources.

I’ve been wondering the same.

I thought it was a conscious effort to reduce workload on the midfield given our lack of depth. However, now we have seven central midfielders to choose from and the high intensity press hasn’t come back.

It was certainly more effective than the current approach.

The play offs will be a disaster. I feel that thee fear factor will result in us losing out.

Something changed, we got just 3 points less in our first 12 games than we have in the 19 since. Only 31 points in 19 games is why we are 4th and not in the top two. Don't get me wrong, we are doing better than I thought we would but after such an impressive start it still manages to feel a little disappointing

Where do we lack depth? We've got 2 or 3 players in every single position. We lack reliably fit players, not depth

Why didn't you post this after the Boro game ? Or has it just dawned on you after today's game

We never blew anyone away like.

The drop off in terms of the intensity and style of play started well before November IMO. The home game with Boro was the first time where there was a noticeable change in approach and we were very, very fortunate to beat Hull and Luton.

The manic pressing that was on show in the first few weeks was never going to be sustainable over a full season but we've often gone too far the other way since then.
