Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

He's not going anywhere for now so now we're making up he earns less than a L2 player per week?!

Lock the thread 😂
I heard he has to do his own washing too and help out in the canteen just to get £600 a week, plus out of that he gives his parents board and pays for a pigmy family over in the Congo just to have a supply of Umbongo

He could only afford a one way journey as well. He’s still hitchhiking back
He's coming back on the back of a Donkey I heard. Possible sighting of Danny Graham giving him a piggyback but not confirmed reports as of yet

He's out of pocket after paying for the adoption money for a snow leopard .

In all seriousness though. I,m glad he's still here and can help our promotion push. Hope he signs a contract with us both parties are happy with as well. We want as many local lads in the team.as we can get if they have the ability which he has.

Curious what sources are these

Looked to me like someone posted it on here and it became a 'fact' in the last few days

If there are several sources then it will clarify it

They're on the internet at a quick google, feel free to have a look for yourself.

I've seen three different websites report the same £600. The Sunderland Echo also reported £600. The source for the Sunderland Echo wasn't the club but they clearly deemed the source they used to be credible enough to print.

Two organisations involved in working with young players have reported that a first contract is typically between £350 and £1,500, with top flight clubs and those close to the first team being at the top end.

In addition, football clubs were investigated by HMRC in 2017 for underpaying apprentices, minimum wage issues. Top flight clubs were paying their apprentices £145 a week in the first year and £155 a week in the second year. In that context, Watson's first professional contract at 17 years old at £600 would have been a canny pay rise for him.

None of this has become fact. I've said in a few posts that it is reported. It cannot be fact because it's not clear where the information reported by the three websites and the Sunderland Echo has come from, but the two organisations that work with young players give us an indication of the salary range for a player in Watson's position when he turned 17.

I reckon the 600 quid is probably about right given it was Watson's first contract and for a 17 years old who was in the squad just four times that season. Others are saying it just can't be true. Either way, I'd just be repeating myself from here so work it out for yourself, sources are there for you on the internet.

Watson is absolutely not on £600 a week
I heard he and his agent haggled long and hard, stating he was and England youth international, was making excellent progress and had scored pre season for the first team. After a lot of tooing and froing they managed to get him £614 a week *

* The above is an internet rumour made up by me. Feel free to pass this on as gospel.
He asked Speakman for some petty cash but was told to claim it back on his expenses.
I heard Speakman loaned him his Megabus season ticket.

Cheers for your reply. Interesting

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on that, let’s be honest his rise has been very quick, we are not talking about rigg here that had tremendous buzz around him last year before he signed his deal. He’s made very quick progress has Watson and maybe he has outpaced his current deal very quickly. Hopefully we offer him a new one soon.

Seriously he could have signed a professional contract in April 2023. He actually signed on September 2023 some 5 months later. He and his agent aren't going to discuss contracts for 5 months and sign on for the basic amount.

Horseshit.

He was playing for England under 17's in the summer of 2023.

He was already attracting interest from other clubs because he hadn't signed a professional contract on his 17th birthday.

He had nowhere near the buzz rigg had though, rigg had been making squads and the team near the end of last season. Think Watson made the bench etc just wasn’t on the same level as rigg at the time. I’d argue still isn’t he’s made a good start and has earned a new deal but I can definitely see how he won’t be on as much as people think at this moment.

I didn't say he had the buzz of Rigg, apparently he was given a deal personally approved by KLD.

However, he was very highly rated. We would have given him a good contract to secure him to the club after 5 months of negotiation. Not a paltry amount the likes of a bog standard 18 year old would have received.

Heard a few worrying things last night.
Heard he wanted the move had agreed terms etc then we pulled the deal because we weren't happy with the fee.
His agent is now subsequently pissed off and told him to pretty much down tools until the summer to try and force a move then.
Not trying to spread shit about but this has come from someone at the club. Anybody else verify it or hopefully say it's complete rubbish (which I hope it is !)
Don't shoot me please I am just passing on what I've been told, like I say I hope it's all a load of crap so happy to be told what I've heard is all bollocks.
Oh aye, he’s gunna turn up on Tuesday morning in a huff saying “my agent told me not to talk to you” isn’t he? 😂

This is more proof that he will not be on £600 per week. That figure will likely be the minimum they offer any player signing their first professional contract. As we saw with Rigg who also didn't sign at 17 straight away, there will have been an offer and then likely some negotiations before agreeing on a figure and then him signing. The 2.5k figure via his family from @Sunderland06 is probably about what I'd expect.

Agree don’t think he will be on the base that’s obvious just don’t think the lad will be on as much as some think. From that aspect I can see how 20k or so is tempting from a move to Brighton. Hopefully we see him sign a new deal closer to what he wants and a nice longer deal. The lad is best served staying here for his career.
