The Hundred 2025

Looks like Surrey are now becoming a Mumbai Indians feeder club. Wonder if the new name will be MI South London or MI Invincibles.

Depressing

I dunno what it all means

I only wanna go and watch Durham play cricket, is that too much to ask?

I've been a member of Durham CCC for years. I don't get there that often as I live a long way away. But I'm a member because like SAFC it's my connection with where I grew up, and my family home.

I don't care if that's Durham CCC, Durham Dynamos or "Durham Cricket" (which I hate more than anything, but i can grit my teeth)

But the minute the club sells its soul, I'm out. If we get a 100 franchise where we will be "Northeast Vikings" or similar, I'm out.

I just want to support County Durham play cricket. As you say "is that too much to ask?"

Owners of Birmingham City have got the Birmingham Phoenix franchise. If they start to bring in some of the football into it they could end up alienating a fuck load of their potential customers. Can’t imagine many Villa fans would want to be involved for example.

Good post, good to see the passion, I agree it’s all about where you’re from

Im a Sunderland fanatic but I’m from Chester le street and grew up as Durham moved into riverside. It’s why I like cricket. I love England cricket but Durham is the reason I don’t wanna see it change

Cricket is the one sport that puts Durham on the map and unites the Northeast. That matters to me as someone who's dad is from Crook and whose mam was Consett. There used to be Durham Wasps Ice Hockey, but we know how that ended.

I saw Durham in the one-day cup against Surrey a few years ago. They lads next to me were from Morpeth and Darlington, but it was all about Durham representing the NE. Not Newcastle, not Sunderland, not Middlesbrough. But Durham, and Durham County at that.

The can continue to play at CLS, but the moment they downplay being Durham or County Durham, is the day I terminate my membership.

Totally agree with all of that, good post

And you left the best to last with the final paragraph. Spot on. That’d be me donec

We'd end up with Northeast Vikings. With a black and white logo and Let's Get Ready to Rumble (played by Sam Fender) as a theme tune.

And that would be me cancelling my membership.

Mind, I'd do the same if we went overtly Sunderland and came out to Prokofiev in red and white shirts. It'd be more appropriate but Durham has its own identity, and should celebrate it.

i can see it happening unfortunately, been lots of talke between the club and them up the road already, Bostock wants to be the 9th team, only saving grace is that its for one month a year and the club will get some extra cash from it

Christ it’s a lot like

You’re selling off half of lords and it’s history so essentially

Always thought cricket was ripe for investment from America though when you look at the links between India and the tech giants

From the sounds of it the London teams are worth a lot & everyone else is worth a few pennys in comparison.

It’s a hell lot of money so hopefully helps English cricket long term.

Change was inevitable, resisting it was futile.

Now it’s making sure money gets to right places

The club get extra cash but eight others do too. Winners will be the players (wage inflation) no doubt.

It is obscene money like, cricket in this country has just changed for ever, will have to see what happened

This will transform counties mind, they'll be financially secure for a long time, its whether they now become irrelevant
we are the county that produces an England world cup winning captain, countless bowlers and the current England test captain

Yet we are not part of this, and have no team to watch and have the top summer months deprived of our best players, who are off playing elsewhere in the country

How am I supposed to be a fan of it?

Bit dramatic, crowds & viewership are what ultimately decide it’s fate and both those metrics are trending downwards & have done since inception. Once the steakholders see their investments aren’t maturing they’ll lose interest.

Also, Cricket is still the third sport behind Rugby and in the years since The Hundred was incepted that gap has only got wider and will probably get overtaken by Darts soon. In the North West & Yorkshire it’s probably the fourth sport behind RL. No amount of investment is going to change that.

I can’t. They’re pulling back a lot on their sporting investments & they were rumoured to have balked on a pretty small sum to buy up Newcastle Falcons. If there was a 9th team coming in it would be public knowledge by now.

Like I said earlier this money a hell of a lot that could transform and bring longevity to the game, it’s changed or is changing everywhere.

It was inevitable we had a short form tournament in a peak designated window like happens in every other country.

There is a bigger picture here, you can see why a fan of Leicester, Derby, Northampton etc may be put out, but it was always going to happen

Mate they’ve just spent 150 million quid on less than half of a team

These are the heads of Microsoft and Google

It’s not going away. Dunno how people can still be this naive

I don’t think it will bring longevity to how I see cricket like, it’s just killed it

It’s not just about derby n that man.

The investments will bring a better product and better quality of player.

Normally the better the product the more the interest.

The disappointing thing about the hundred was that it has not delivered on the promise of top quality players, hopefully the investment brings that quality up and interest will follow all through the game?

I imagine everybody wants that?

These people not daft they not going to spend 145 million for a half share without doing their homework.

Now the investment has come the narrative now seems to be changing from ‘ they will not be interested’ to ‘ they will get bored’

It depends where all the money goes?

But it’s a massive injection of cash for cricket in this country.

The challenge and it’s a massive challenge is getting the calendar right, embracing and accepting it, and all working together.
