say i've never seen a David Lynch film (i haven't), and was going to sit down to discover what he's all about - which film would you recommend i watch?
 

Another vote for Blue Velvet. I thought it was the craziest most mind blowing film I'd ever seen when it came out, and it still shocks today.
 
Il Postino (The Postman) 1994 - Amazon Prime 9.5/10

Watched this last night as everyone else had an early night. Absolutely brilliant, there's some really beautiful moments in it, and Troisi is superb, there's an awkwardness with him that is played brilliantly. Sadly Troisi died less than 24 hours after principal photography finished from a heart attack. He had postponed surgery to complete the film but was so ill during it he could only work for an hour or so at a time and pre-recorded his lines incase he died before filming finished. Knowing that does give the ending a gut punch.

Try the Arg original of Nine Queens marra. It’s a cracking conman type film. Even the US remake is decent.

Been sorting through my dvd boxes in the loft and I’ve about ten Argentinian films. Nine Queens is the pick of em though.

Funnily enough, I was going to post about how much I've been loving watching Argentinian cinema in recent years. Some cracking stuff coming from there:

He was involved in its making so I doubt they’d get his tosserness in.

The five I brought from loft to watch are:
El Bonaerense. 2004. Locksmith gets dragged into criminality.
The Clan. 2015. Scorsesesque Mafia tale based on true story.
Cana Dorada. 2008. Pipe factory worker starts making guns for local bad lads.
White Elephant. 2012. Half built hospital becomes the stage for disputes between govt, unions, Mafia, church and locals.
The Secrets In Their Eyes. 2009. Oscar winner. Ex cop writes novel based on true crime and stirs up shite.

All have rave reviews on covers.

You must’ve seen Bonbon? Argentinian feller “inherits” his dead mates huge dog after the funeral and everyone’s gone home after the do. He lives at other end of Argentina so they embark on a road trip in his knackered car. It’s wonderful stuff.

Where Evil Lurks is a grand Argentinian horror, where possession is a virus.

I'm currently reading Down and Dirty Pictures by Peter Biskind about the rise of Miramax and indy cinema. Il Postino was one of Harvey Weinstein's finds - he single-handedly created a mass market for subtitled films in the US. Horrible man, but amazing eye for a great film.

I love Philippe Noiret in this. Last year I revisited one of my favourite films from 80s, Les Ripoux (aka Le Cop, aka My New Partner). Noiret at his very best.

Before Sunrise (1995)

Returned to this as I believe it’s the 30th anniversary of its release today (US). Struck even more by the chemistry between Hawke and Delpy, the dialogue feels so natural and effortless, it’s so easy to get lost in the film and their story. Simply wonderful.

9/10

I intend on revisiting Sunset and Midnight in the coming weeks (I always thought Sunset was the best of the 3)

Just watched Superman: The Christopher Reeve story (2024)

What a wonderful documentary film, the man was a real hero and it was very moving in parts.
It basically showcased his rise and family life, then the accident and the aftermath.with interjections from his Hollywood friends (but obviously sadly not his best friend Robin Williams, but he did feature 😔)
Hearing his wife died not long after (from lung cancer) leaving their child orphaned was very upsetting.
I'd give it a strong 8/10, it was excellent 👍

A Complete Unkown-9.5/10
A must watch for any Bob Dylan fan, probably the best music biopic I've seen and such an amazing performance from the lead. It does well because it only decided to focus on a small portion of his life/career.
