Sat down Saturday night to watch this with the family and we all struggled to stay engaged with the film.
The film didn't address any pre or post stories regarding the main characters situation and was a snapshot of a summer holiday in Turkey which seemed to be recalled by the grown up daughter.
Unbelievable that Mescal was Oscar nominated for his monosyllabic Scottish role.

Expected to get a few at the Oscars.
Guy Pearce and Adrien Brody are such odd ones, both can put in a great performance but their choice of movies at times has been minging.

I bet you it's absolutely shite
well I might think that if I ever bother to watch it, seems long but then again people watch a full mini series in one night. I usually take reviews with a pinch of salt but the Google ones sounded like me Audiences found the movie to be a waste of time and criticized the bad sound design, especially the Hungarian accent imitation.

Gladiator 2 getting positive reviews in some of the major outlets have stopped me ever trusting movie reviews again tbh, the audience ratings are normally a better indicator. Seems they look at the cast and director and go from that so as to not upset them.I bet you it's absolutely shite

The Web (1947)
Edmond O’Brien is a lawyer hired by Vincent Price to be his bodyguard. Price fears for his life because his former business partner has been released from prison. The night that he registers his gun with the police, O’Brien kills an intruder in Price’s house. Officer William Bendix smells a rat, and there’s also the question of a million dollars that was never recovered.
Classy B-movie with some smart dialogue and energetic performances. Price shows that he was a very fine dramatic actor prior to being a horror icon, O’Brien is excellent as usual, and Bendix plays a dogged cop with a glint in his eye. Ella Raines also puts in a good turn.
The plot is old hat nowadays, but the atmosphere is great, and there’s some lovely character dynamics going on too.

Feel like a lot of people see reviews/ratings and pretend to like a film more than they actually do. Like if 'professional' people are saying it's a masterpiece then it must be a masterpiece, right?
Nah, it's all subjective. Seen some Oscar bait that I've loved, some that I've thought were shite. Granted some films are obviously more well-made than others but that doesn't mean it's good. Luca Guadagnino filming someone sweating and bouncing a tennis ball for 5 minutes in slow motion might be novel but it doesn't mean I have to enjoy it.

A Bittersweet Life (2005) 8/10
Thanks to @Fetch Fletch for the recommendation. Turns out I had seen it, I think when it came out. It was largely filmed in and around the Crown Hotel, five minutes from where I lived in Seoul. I'd forgotten most of the plot, so it was like seeing it for the first time.
Veteran 2 (aka I, the Executioner) (2024) 8/10
Sequel to Veteran, which I saw a few months ago. The original was a comedy-action movie. This has much less of the comedy. Centres on cops hunting a serial killer, but is also a critique of Korean streaming culture.
The Plot (2024) 4/10
Another critique of Korean streaming culture. A secretive group stage intricate assassinations that look like accidents. The movie has so many twists and turns eventually it implodes under its own weight. Complete waste of a decent idea (based on a Chinese movie, Accident).

I thought Nosferatu was alright.
Excellent production values. Steady performances. Lush sets. But…
As much as all that. It’s still “just” Dracula.
In fact I’m quite confused about why Eggers wanted to remake this rather than call it Dracula. Only difference is the names really.
All in all, I just felt that despite some absolutely absurd performances in Coppola’s vision, I think it’s a better film. Well, better may be harsh. Nosferatu is fine, it just didn’t bring anything new to the table whatsoever.
Also felt the ending just kind of happened.

seems to be the common theme, i'm gonna watch it this weekend... consensus would appear to be that it looks brilliant but is missing something in the second half of the story, some finishing touch that stops it being out of this world?
It just doesn’t do enough to be different from Coppola’s and I think that’s to its detriment.

This part of the vampire genre has been done a lot mind. It's the third version of Nosferatu specifically - I need to maybe give the 1979 version another go as I seem to be the only person who doesn't think it's a classic - not to mention a film they made about the original production that imagined if the main actor was really a vampire. Official adaptations of Dracula are legion, if you just count the main ones you've got the 1931 Lugosi, Hammer's with Christopher Lee, 1979 with Frank Langella, the Coppola one and all the various sequels, spin offs, versions of the story from other characters' point of view like Renfield and Van Helsing, even had a spoof with Leslie Neilson. Not to mention a lot of successful vampire films have taken it in all different directions like Near Dark or Blade. Did we need another version of the basic Dracula story?
