Sunderland railway station.


It’s not the cost of renting the unit. It’s the cost of the business rates in that area of town that’s the real deterrent.

I know this first hand, because I wanted to set a business up around there a few years back.
Business Rate are 50% of the rateable amount, unless the rateable value is less then £15,000 at which point you get small business relief.


Most shops in the city centre are £20k+ a year which means the businesses are paying full business rates, I think there should be some law where the local council can take ownership of retail space that has been empty 5+ years and rent it at a cheaper rate to encourage businesses to open.

feels like they've given that to the work experience kid - here's a pile of customer emails, can you spend your week away from school replying to them - fairly sure AI is a bit more human in its response.
 
What can an MP do about a private commercial property?

To be fair Sunderland Station isn't private, it's owned by the government right now as they made Northern public, not that they like to mention that as it's a mess. Not that the MP will do anything anyway mind as it doesn't have a photoshoot at the end of it or a christmas tree if it's a certain mayor.

Ran by Northern I'm sure so it should be there remit to decorate and get the units rented out if I'm right. Don't believe Network Rail manage any stations bar the major ones like Kings Cross etc. Believe all the North East stations are government ran as they're either Northern, LNER or Transpennine depending on the station.

There's some right anomolies around aswell like Northern running Alnmouth yet it has two trains a day, believe Chester Le Street is similar aswell.
