Members Forum Fixtures Meeting Nov 26

I think most of us in attendance got a lot more out of this than we expected. Hosted by Ash Thorpe we went briefly through the fixture list (with a magnifying glass due to the small print!) looking at the ones that caught the eye and a few jokes at the home game against Surrey with everyone wondering if they would be arsed to turn up this time.

Leah Dobson and Phoebe Turner from the Women's Team were first up and both said they were settling in and said Durham would be the team to beat. Phoebe lamented the fact that in the new Knockout competition we wouldn't have a home tie.

Next up were Sam Connors, Will Rhodes and Emilio Gay. All three basically outlined their roles and hopes for next season. Connors said he had had a difficult season with Derbyshire and needed a new challenge and fresh start. Rhodes said he was expecting to spend the rest of his career at Durham and revealed that Rushy had told him what a great club he was joining. Gay said that he couldn't believe hoe friendly everyone was at the club and was hoping to pile on the runs in 2025 to gain the attention of the England selectors.

Vic had a quick word and said that the weather had been a lot more favourable in October and November compared to last year and said he had the grass was still growing.

Marcus North up next and here it gets interesting. He was over the moon for Carse and Potts getting England recognition and and warned us not to expect to see much of the former with his IPL and probable England commitments but said that in the first block of seven CC fixtures in 2025 he fully envisages Stokes, Potts and.....Woody !!!!to be available to play at least some (and Woody himself had said this). He then said he felt we missed out on a couple of wins last season ie Lancs and Worcs which would have seen us challenging Surrey. He thinks it's great that we're playing them twice next season as if we can beat them then we're real title contenders.

North then said we'd had really bad luck with our overseas bowlers last season but Durham are in advance stages of negotiating a new deal to get Scott Boland back here for next season and if for any reason that didn't come off then then we had another couple of irons in the fire.
He was asked about Lees and he smiled and said he has just signed a three year extension on his contract and then said so had Ollie Robinson ! He also didn't say as much but it looks like Ollie will be off to NZ shortly.

Next up North said that Ben McKinney WILL be our opener next season and he was thrilled by how he, Hoggy and young Minto had taken their opportunity in 2024. He was asked about the batting squeeze for next season and what that means for Borthwick and he said there is an announcement in the next week which is exciting for Scotty at this stage of his career...batting coach? 2nd team coach?...watch this space.
North sort of hinted that Lees will be the First Team Captain in 2025.

Hope I haven't missed too much but I'm sure @mosi will fill in any empty spaces.

Cheers f

Cheers for that update some very interesting information especially from North.

Point of order chairman

Ash Thorpe owes me £5 on a bet from the 1997 Ashes

Superb post and thanks for all that info very much appreciated.

Hard to really pick out any negative of any of that aside from how the heck we picking an XI for the CC

Lees (C)
McKinney/Gay
Rhodes/Gay
Bedders
Robinson
Stokes/Ackers
De Leede/Stokes
Raine
Wood/Coggers/Hogg/Minto
Potts
Parky

I forgot about Sam Connors.

How will we fit him the side?
No idea didn't even include in him my post above

Or Boland if we sign him, an embarrassment of riches

Guess it's to cover Potts/Carse when they are on inevitable international duty and IPL in Carse case.

Thanks mate, really appreciate the download.

Sad to have seen Borthwick's career fade the way it has but I don't blame him for giving it a go at Surrey (and I don't want to derail the thread going over old ground).

Nice to see a few youngsters getting around the team, hope McKinney really takes his chance. Exciting times ahead in the CC based on how the squad is shaping up.

Fantastic report and FANTASTIC news all round, especially with regards to availability of England players/the overseas signing(s)/the re-signings.

Class. Excited for 2025 now!

Boland re-signing! 36 year old with a chronic foot condition -currently 4_wickets at 47 each in Sheffield Shield. Sorry, but smells of North nepotism again.

Christ, you might need to get some burn gel for that incredibly hot take :o

When Durham made the signing of Boland a year ago pundits throughout the game were so excited by it that they spoke of Durham being the team to challenge Surrey for the title.

Us getting him back for a second try seems like very shrewd business to me. It could fail, he could be totally ineffective, he could break down in the first game and leave us again - but I can’t get mad at this bit of business, it just makes sense.

The age thing doesn’t bother me because Wagner and Siddle are both older and both made effective contributions for us last year.
I think most of us in attendance got a lot more out of this than we expected.

To revisit this, we’re going to have some batting lineup next year.

Lees
Mckinney
Gay
Ackermann
Bedingham
Rhodes
Robinson

That’s with Borthwick on the fringe and a number of those above probably batting out of position :o

We could start the season with a bowling attack of:

Potts
Boland
Raine
Wood
Stokes

:o

Obviously I hope he is a success but a chronic foot condition, age and recent form are valid reasons for concern in my humble opinion.
Not feeling any need for the burn gel 😀

Great update thanks. Good positive stuff and all we need now is some decent weather in April and May when we could be fielding some cracking teams well worth watching. Just a shame the FTECB continues to marginalise the county championship in its scheduling.

We have about 15/16 players who could easily walk into the team. Including Woody who will be avafor some games.

I think we'll make a strong challenge for the title this year.
