1st TEST :: New Zealand v England

Mustard/onions is to pope what I am to dom Bess

He won’t have a word said that’s negative about him

I doubt Foakes will get a call up , so if there is one, I would think that Robinson is next in line

So glad we picked 4 spinners in the squad(Bashir,Leach,Rehan and Bethell) when we might not even need a spinner in any game.

Yet barely picked 1 keeper, think Pope has kept more in FC cricket than Cox.

As much as it puts us at a disadvantage for the 1st test, I think if we call up Robinson for the second test we'll have a better player than Cox.

RE disadvantage for the first test. We've got Pope in a hole with the bat at the moment. This was a massive series for him and throwing the pressure on keeping on top, after dealing with captaincy in the previous series. Is so massively unfair on him when they could have just picked a backup keeper.

So unless we win the toss and bat. He can't bat 3 and be keeper. So we're likely going to have to rejig the order and bat someone else at 3. Then just weakens our batting lineup having to play Bethell too, when I doubt they had any intention of playing him just one of these see him around the test squad picks.

He's pretty much the best keeper in the country and averages 30 in tests.

He also plays at a different tempo to most of our players which I think would give a bit of balance to the team.
Careful here. Pope is mustards fav player

In years gone by Pope wouldn’t be in the squad now

Spot on

Aye, he 'only' averages 37.7 in first class but is a crap keeper.

He’s a good county player, he’s not international standard, that’s not a remotely controversial view like.
Is this foakes you are talking about ?

Anyone picking Ben Foakes over Ollie Robinson is having a laugh like
Don't feed the troll, Carts

No trolling at all, he’s not good enough, he’s really good mates with Ben Stokes too and even that’s not good enough to sway it

He’s 5th choice probably

Yet you are championing a bloke with an almost identical first class record?

Averages 37.2.

He averaged 58 last year

Why do people pick career averages? Like what’s what Ben Foakes averaged 8 years go got to do with it?

Ben Foakes is a good keeper and a steady batsman but not good enough to bat at test level, he hasn’t got enough gears and is terrible batting with the tail. There’s just this weird romanticism with wicket keeping on the internet. Plus he plays for Surrey.

Robinson is a class above,
It’s funny as I read the same thing on here that picking Smith over Foakes was a terrible idea, it wasn’t. They’re night and day.

It is odd how Robinson isn't getting picked.
They reckon he will be called up for the second test.

I dunno what visa implications for working in NZ are at such short notice. At guess it's down to that or perhaps by the time he can fly out will he be in any condition to play a test match with jet lag etc.

Maybe they should have planned better with their squad selection. But that makes too much sense!

The above all irrelevant really as after this series Smith will be England keeper for countless years and rightly soo.
I haven't seen an enormous amount of Robinson, but if he's as good as is said on here, I wouldn't be against letting Smith find his way in Tests for a couple of years before moving him up to 3 (he definitely has the game for it), and giving Robinson the gloves.

After bumbling between Bairstow and Buttler for years, it's nice to have some genuinely quality keepers to mull over

Smith probably good enough eventually for 3, but he is also totally and utterly the right person to bat with the tail.

Therefore think they will leave him there for a long while yet and can see the logic .

Robinson form fell off a cliff once he was overlooked for the England squad in favour of Smith/Cox.

But he's definitely got the ability to play test cricket and do a similar lower order job Smith has done. He showed that with the Lions in India scoring two 80 scores at 75 SR with the tail.

I think there are plenty of middle order bats around, so seems daft rushing to make Smith bat higher, when he looks perfect there.

We did the same stupid thing with Bairstow when he should have just been left at 7.
