Lancashire CEO worried about Agents ruining cricket

Lancashire’s chief executive has said agents are the main threat to the future of the County Championship. Daniel Gidney, one of county cricket’s longest-serving chief executives, criticised agents for not caring about the championship and instead turning players’ heads to the ever-burgeoning number of franchise tournaments.

“We need to have more of an open conversation,” Gidney said as he watched Lancashire turn the tables on Somerset at Old Trafford to improve their survival chances and give Surrey the title. “Coaches get blamed, administrators get blamed, but if you want to blame anybody, blame agents … I think the game as a whole needs to come together to find a way to support the championship.

“England players don’t have to play in the championship, agents don’t care about the championship. More prize money would help and I think we need to find a way of paying four or five players a lot more money. Instead of £80,000-90,000 being the top domestic salary, we need to find a way of paying £200k … and saying part of that deal is that you don’t play franchise cricket.”

He's basically complaining about losing 1 player,Luke Wood. If a Durham player decided he'd rather play for the Benga Tigers in the Zim T10 I'd hope North would tell him to p**s off and close the door on the way out. You've invalidated your contract The simple solution if there is a mass exodus is to invest greater resources into the grass roots to create a big enough supply chain to cover such losses.

careful what you wish for i'd say. currently there is no way of insuring yourself against developing cricketing talent for somewhere else (whether that's the england team, franchise cricket, surrey/notts etc) but it is bonkers that we can have a player under contract who can then just sod off to play for a crisp packet city or carry drinks for the england reserve team in the middle of the season

I’m not in the habit of defending agents, but I’d say ‘cricket administrators’ are the bigger problem in all of that.

Several of Durham’s lot have been recruited into the England squad for a very long time. I can’t remember when stokes last played a T20 for example. Miss the lad
