CC : Surrey v Durham

After our magnificent victory over Lancashire this week- a game that had more broken records than Disco Demolition Night- our Division 1 status has been 99.99% assured for next season (unless the ECB decide to dock us 50 points for exceeding our paternity leave for players budget).

We now travel to The Oval to face Surrey where I imagine at 4pm yesterday our opponents would have reckoned to have been more than eight points ahead of nearest rivals Somerset but thanks to Leach and Vaughan this is the situation they find themselves in as they aim to make it a hat trick of County Championship titles. Meanwhile we are in 5th place on 154 points 44 points behind our opponents and 47 ahead of ninth placed Lancs.

As far as team news is concerned well we'll be without Bedders (rumours that Gay will be eligible to play are as yet, unconfirmed) while Potts and Carse are on England duty and we also could be without leading wicket taker Ben Raine although I expect Hogg to return and while Coggs played for the 2nds at Gosforth this week... but only as a batsman.

Our last visit in the Championship to The Oval was back in the fateful 2016 season when Burham (135) and Colly (106no) helped us to 607-7 and a draw. Surrey were due to play us in 2021 season up here but apparantly they were washing their hair that night.

Weather looks sunny and dry with temperatures reaching 23°C.

It's going to be difficult but let's get into them and give them something to think about. Haway Durham !!!

If Bedingham is not available and Gay comes in for his debut it will be interesting to see where he bats he is certainly a top 3 if not a specialist opener. Does that mean Borthwick drops down the order another spot.

I would think so and I would have Ackermann at 5 and the out of form Robinson at 6.
So looking to next season unless an established batsmen does leave the club it must seriously put Borthwick chances of remaining captain in jepody. As if they keep it as it is with him he would have to retain his place in the starting XI until at least the break for the blast mid summer.

Ollie Pope could’ve been available but he’s practicing his golf before the Pakistan Open in October

I think this is harsh

England pay his wages he’s just done 6 test matches And is away all winter

Do they not need time off to refresh? They do for me

England do pay his wages but they didn’t nurture his talents and/or turn him into a professional cricketer - it’s instances like this which annoy county cricket supporters and further drive a divide between ‘them and us’.

He’s entitled to a break, but given his abysmal form I’d argue he’s better off playing in two Championship games to try and find some form before he has a few weeks off prior to Pakistan.

He just made 150 in his last test

Would you be expecting stokes to play for Durham if he was fit?

If the title was on the line and Stokes was available/fit then I'd expect Stokes would want to play for Durham. However England would prevent that. Potts insisted on playing for Durham this week which says a lot about the lad and the culture Campbell has created
