After our magnificent victory over Lancashire this week- a game that had more broken records than Disco Demolition Night- our Division 1 status has been 99.99% assured for next season (unless the ECB decide to dock us 50 points for exceeding our paternity leave for players budget).
We now travel to The Oval to face Surrey where I imagine at 4pm yesterday our opponents would have reckoned to have been more than eight points ahead of nearest rivals Somerset but thanks to Leach and Vaughan this is the situation they find themselves in as they aim to make it a hat trick of County Championship titles. Meanwhile we are in 5th place on 154 points 44 points behind our opponents and 47 ahead of ninth placed Lancs.
As far as team news is concerned well we'll be without Bedders (rumours that Gay will be eligible to play are as yet, unconfirmed) while Potts and Carse are on England duty and we also could be without leading wicket taker Ben Raine although I expect Hogg to return and while Coggs played for the 2nds at Gosforth this week... but only as a batsman.
Our last visit in the Championship to The Oval was back in the fateful 2016 season when Burham (135) and Colly (106no) helped us to 607-7 and a draw. Surrey were due to play us in 2021 season up here but apparantly they were washing their hair that night.
Weather looks sunny and dry with temperatures reaching 23°C.
It's going to be difficult but let's get into them and give them something to think about. Haway Durham !!!
