Test squad for Pakistan

25/60 wickets were taken by Robinson/Anderson/Wood last time.

A massive hole to fill from those picked, especially how miserly they all were, all going under 3 an over.

Those picked I can't see having the same effect in both wicket taking or economy.

Where is the proof he can bowl 90 mph never seen him nudge 87mph? They quote loads of bowlers as being fast to me that’s regularly over 90mph of which England have only 2.

Both very fragile in Wood and Archer tje likes of Stone and Atkinson are lively pace but not out and out fast.

To me Hull has to improve a hell of lot in every aspect before he’s close to this level. I don’t think Carse will ever be test at standard with the ball no accurate enough and he struggles to stay fit.

All 3 bowled superb reverse swing spells in that series.

Carse, Hull and Woakes pretty pointless selections abroad. Can’t see how at 35 Woakes is suddenly going to crack playing abroad.

Even though a Durham player I think England really overate Carse. Hull is nowhere near ready for this level.

The Woakes one for me I can’t help but think of the Anderson situation.

They “pushed out” Anderson as they wanted to prepare for the Ashes, and didn’t seem him being a big enough threat over there. Completely fair enough.

But then continue to pick Woakes who has never really been any kind of threat abroad?

I know it’s not as simple as that, and as @MustardAndOnions has said they’ll want someone like a Woakes to take the new ball. I suppose with Woakes as well you get someone who can bat. Which if you’re potentially going with both Bashir and Leach, Woakes is a decent bat too.

With the exception of Woakes and Leach, there isn’t that much experience amongst the bowlers, and for me we’re missing someone with that extra bit. Archer and Wood can’t be helped really.

Archer is available now

Easing him back in via white ball cricket though aren’t they. Not sure how much, if any, red ball he’s played for Sussex?

Real shame about Wood being injured
Aye true he's just been playing the 100 what's happening with josh tongue he's been out for ages

I accept Woakes is not great abroad and I wouldn’t have taken him on this trip

However there is slight revisionism on Jimmy

He wasn’t taking as many wickets with the new ball in the first innings, and rarely took wickets in the 2nd. He also wasn’t bowling as many overs as he was, when stokes was injured, it was huge pressure

Look at the way Woakes transformed the ashes, I think he’s more incisive with the new ball now

There’s an argument not to retire Jimmy and use him when you need him, but that’s complicated

The big thing is Robinson

I see this as Woakes over Robinson.

I was talking to a mate who is a cricket journo who toured India, and he said the whole set up was pissed off with him. His new lass was there the whole tour, nobody else had theirs, and he spent a lot of time with her and they launched a podcast discussing private stuff

Carse wouldn't get into my starting XI for Durham in the CC if everyone was fit and available, nevermind an international call up. He's currently averaging 106 with the red ball this season.

Carse and Hull, pure vibes.

Zany Rob Key.
The selectors must be able to see something in Carse that the rest of us don't.

They must be, but I think @MustardAndOnions has probably hit on it when he mentions that he’s a genuine all rounder and that perhaps he’s the Stokes replacement incase of injury.

Now I don’t he’s as good a batsman, but he can bowl quicker and based on the fact he’s now got two FC hundreds it’s clear that his batting has become a massive asset to a team who (very much like Durham’s love for three dimensional cricketers) love their bowlers who can bat.

Either way, congratulations to him and it’s another massive ego boost for the phenomenal youth development team involved at Durham.

Aye I think he is, he’s a later developer but he could bat top 6 for some county sides I think

Where as Atkinson couldn’t

his bowling has always been hit n miss like. I personally think he needs to be even quicker to justify the amount of 4 balls he bowls

He would for me mind him n BDL 7 n 8
Of the four spinners that went to India, three are going, Hartley misses out.

Interesting.

Leach is quality and is bowling really well

Can’t seen them picking 3. Wonder who plays, Ahmed or Leach

Ahmed did well last time but I’m not convinced

Think they will pick Leach, and rightly so. But also think they can see Rehan batting much higher up.

Robinson is clearly now toast. It’s such a shame, not that I have much sympathy, I can’t immediately think of a more unfulfilled talent in English cricket for non performance reasons

First time round I agree

2nd time like he’s very thin and looks fit, maybe his body just can’t handle it? It’s hard work

It’s a shame though for sure
