Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

The talk was always about us being interested in a loan to replace Hemir who'd be heading out on loan himself, on top of a deal for Mendy. Just went quiet and everyone assumed it would be a PL loan.
Aye doubt it's one or the other especially since they seem like completely different players

So, the stats show that we only conceded 3 or 4 more in the second half, despite shipping 9 in 2 games in the second half.

24 goals shipped in the first half, 27 in the second half.5 clean sheets in the first, 7 in the second half. If it wasn't for Dodds making a complete arse against Southampton and Blackburn, our record would have been immense.

The defence was good all season, and was never the problem.

So the team didn't look open under Mowbray, especially the more the season went on?

I'm a Mowbray fan, but most fans would concede that. I'd find it difficult to take anyone seriously who wouldn't concede it.

Then we didn't actively look to improve that?
Being more compact and structured under Beale and then negative under Dodds which resulted in us losing any sort of forward penetration we had.

What you seem to be saying is it can only be the amount of goals conceded that determines if you are defensively sound or not, without looking at how that's achieved and the set up and balance of the team as a whole - and of course that cannot differ or be changed or effected over the course of the season.

After 22 games on 19th December (Beale first game 23rd iirc) we had scored 32 goals. Mowbray left 5th December (we'd scored 3 inbetween) and we only scored 20 more goals over the remaining 24 games.

We'd conceded 24 goals on 16th December (22 games) and finished conceding 54, meaning 30 more goals were conceded over those 24 games.

Simply looking at that shows there was a drop off all round, but noticeably more in attacking impetus - suppose we didn't try to tighten up then?

There was problems in defence as well as attack and certainly in central midfield which left us vulnerable.

oh, please take me seriously!

...or alternatively just paraphrase what I have said incorrectly in as patronising a way as possible.

You said we lacked dominance in the air. Which somone quickly pointed out we have won all our defensive headers. We haven't come under too much aerial pressure, so your comment was horseshit.

Then, rather than going, 'oh shit, so we have but I think Ballard is better in the air', you said that everyone kept telling you are defence was good because of our defensive record, until it wasn't. But our defensive record was always good. If you take out the shit shows against Southampton and Blackburn we conceded a goal a game . Also worth noting Hjelde and Styles were our LB on those days.

I didn't say anything about not being open under Mowbray. We got away with that stule of play because our defensive unit is good. We got away without conceding too many under Dodds and Beale because the defence are good (although not as good without a recognised LB).

You can keep saying you can see it with your own eyes, but the fact is we don't concede many.

Would be an exciting time if we could get two strikers in. The possibilities with our wingers and the the way we could switch up our approach when needed would make us an even more difficult team to face.

Alexandre Mendy's entourage hopes for a quick outcome and is counting on the new management of SM Caen to finalize the deal

Sunderland have increased their initial offer (amount between 2 and 3M € including bonuses) despite new interests (Lecce, Sampdoria, Salernitana), the player wants to join Sunderland
So we've bid 3 packets of Lidl crisps then?

This could be key for us, there's not a massive amount of scope to switch things up as things stand. We're very like for like in forward areas (Mundle for Clarke, Poveda or Ba for Roberts, Rusyn for Mayenda), would be nice to have the option of playing two strikers when needed and two strikers who would be very different in style.

Spot on.

And this.
