Tommy Conway - Mutants

if we're calling 4.5m out of our price range we might as well jsut give up.

he's 22 and has 24 goals in 81 games across the last two seasons in the division we're in. i don't think we got as many as that between stewart, simms, gelhardt, semedo, burstow, mayneda and rusyn did we?

rusyn, mayneda and semedo's wages put together probably will be lower than conways. for good reason.

You keep banging on about 24 on 81.

He's currently a ten goal a season striker and he's only done it once.

The leagues top scorer has just moved for 9m. You can argue till the cows come home they've over paid.

A transfer is fee plus wages. Conway has probably cost boro close to 10m over the span of his contract. The lads we've signed come nowhere near 10m

My Bristol City mate ain’t happy like. Said imagine trading Taunton and Bristol for Middlesbrough. Similar sized clubs in my opinion too.

I keep banging on about what he's actually done in his career. you're right, he only got ten goals a season once. the season before he got 9, plus he's got 5 cup goals over the last 2 years.

mayenda has 1 in 27 (his goal in the french second tier) and hemir has 2 in 45 (both goals in the second tier of portugal)

And probably cos us 3m quid

They aren't the same.

Spanish second division and Portuguese academy players are on buttons. Conways wages will have been higher than both at Bristol city

I'm not disputing conway costs more. i just don't know why you're happier to have 3 players who between them haven't managed to score as many as conway has on his own, and don't look anywhere near ready to do so.

you talk about 4.5m as if it is some outlandish figure we couldn't hope to spend, but we spend about that in january on hjelde and mundle. if we want to actually progress we have to buy players who might actually be good some day soon. we got 10m for stewart, spending half that on a 22 year old with two decent season s behind him at this level looks incredibly obvious.

he'd actually, depressing, probably be the best striker we'd have signed since we were in the premiership just going on his record.

Because your looking at it like a computer game.

We don't have the budget boro do its pretty clear.

Mundle came from Belgium and hjekde was a sub in the same league, they didn't command big wages. It isn't thr fees it's the wages we won't pay. Conway isn't a 5m signing he's a 10m signing with his contract, we don't have that to spend on a striker.

We have crown jewels in Patterson ballard Clarke Roberts Neil who have all penned new contracts they will be on big money for the championship.

Do we lack ambition definitely, but I don't agree with you that the money was there to sign Conway.

Middlesbrough seem to go for it every 3 years , then become a selling club for the next 2 when they don’t go up.
I think this year, with what I saw the other night , they might go up.

I am still not sure whether it’s good players ( who have not done much elsewhere) or that Carrick is a really good manager.

The likes of McGree Akpom Latte Lah van de berg , nobody else was interested in them. Dieng the keeper was always down the bottom with QPR.
He is still getting a tune out of Howson and Ayling

Granted he has inherited some good young ones like Jones and Hackney. But I am not sure many of his squad would do much away from Carrick.

I think there will be a few prem clubs watching his progress.

I think it's a mixture of both. Carrick is a good manager and is getting better but our recruitment has been good. The club have invested massively in scouting under Kieran Scott.

McGree and Van Den Berg were chased by a lot of clubs btw.

I think Gibson is 'going for it' because he knows we have a chance this season. Everything is stable, the league feels a bit weaker, Carrick is ready it seems and the fans are on board.

I’d say you were a very good bet for top six.

A young lad from bristol city who in your words has had one good season and we can't afford his wages.

Patterson, ballard, clarke, roberts, neil - crown jewels who will be on big money for the championship and we've signed them all to new contracts recently.

Let's just agree to disagree mr speakman, you seem to think signing 10 cheap players is much better than signing decent ones. we're never getting promoted this way.

They fell off badly last season. I think the better teams in the division will beat them comfortably. They beat a Leeds side that's sold 3 of their best players and not replaced them. I wouldn't take much notice just yet.

I would say so too. But we all know football can kick you in the balls. It's a big season for Carrick

We fell off badly? Boro?

We started badly more like. We finished like a train.

I never said it was better. Now your just making stuff up cos I've picked holes in your point

The club have an approach. Is it ambitious? No its not.

But we can't afford 10m gambles. Maybe we will if Clarke goes for big money
