Yeah I thought that particular comment was naive and a bit silly of him and offensive to cricket as a whole.

In the post you quoted though I was making the point that I think it’s fair to accept that they is some quality cricket played in this and other short format tournaments.

And accept the fact that bowlers have bowled particularly well in this competition which I thought naively might be praised by the many who have said a lot that it favours the batting side too much.

And that people can dislike a tournament but still have the grace to accept that point.
People have banging on for a while that bowlers are at a disadvantage yet when that balanced the other way and they bowl really well no praise in the slightest

More money made from and attendees than a while season of county cricket.

The 8 counties now don't want to sell to franchises as they are making a fortune out of this. A competition which nobody wants to come and pay and see according over 50s county 4 day ham and cheese and flask takers.

Blimey this will be the new 50/50 within 3 years as counties want a piece of it instead of playing in front of 14 paying spectators today at Durham 50/50.

Players want it counties want it. Get used to cricket moving on
Hang on sorry to excite you a battering had just left a 6 ball over in their off stump. Applaud loudly while everyone else has fallen asleep and celebrate by a swig out your flask and a bite on your homemade sandwiches. Cricket needs to move on. And it will thankfully.

I personally think and always have that they plenty of room for red ball cricket and white ball.

And respect whichever format people prefer.

Condescending remarks which you are making towards fans who like a certain format does you no favors mate.

To be fair his comment was made in the context of the Hundred which is designed to attract and entertain kids by seeing "the ball hit out of the ground".Also it isn't fun,nor is it good cricket,when a ball rears off a length to chin height.I thought it was valid criticism in the context of what that format is aimed at.

Well the thread title implies it's a discussion about the merits or otherwise of that format. There's a separate thread,the Hundred,to discuss the matches.

Balls rarely, if ever, get hit out of the big grounds in England. Hit into the outfield over the tiny boundary, would be more accurate.

And I thought he was talking about the ball doing a bit, not bad pitches. A spell of hostile pace bowling is the single greatest spectacle in cricket and it's been pretty much legislated out of 16.4/20 over games.

And I bet strike rates are still well above 100, yet we're hearing moans that it's too hard to score runs. Ridiculous. Just get bowling machines in and be done with it.

Yep that’s where Livingstone was out of order, as in this tournament the balance between bat and ball as been closer than normal T20 tournaments and the bowlers have bowled particularly well, Livingstone has struggled himself, but then again last 2/3 years gone back as a player

If anything we should be praising that, bowlers playing very well, we have still had good scoring rate in some games but a lot better bowling.

Mind that has still brought a lot of criticism from people like Livingstone and others who think fans just want to see balls hit out of the park all the time.

Which is wrong, fans imo do like big shots but like to see good bowling and more of a contest between the two.

This tournament has provided that this time, but that doesn’t stop the criticism as it will never get any praise whatsoever for various well documented reasons we have gone over a thousand times.

I get your point about hostile bowling and you get to see that in test matches, but I still find it skilful good death bowling in T20 cricket, Yorkers, slower ball variations the mind contest between bowler and batsman, there is some skilful white ball bowlers out there mind who don’t get praise they deserve imo.

There's a certain degree of irony in Livingstone's claim in that by his criteria it's a long time since he's regularly supplied that desired form of entertainment. This format is adapted to make boundary hitting easy, that is what kids like to see;that's obvious from their reaction of card waving and cheering; obviously capturing their involvement is a positive.Undeniable also that well disguised slower deliveries e.g. knuckle balls or fast toe capping Yorkers require great skill but I doubt that youngsters are aware of or can appreciate such nuances.

It's simply not true that every aspect of the format is criticised -they don't even watch the event.

I certainly agree with both yours and Steak Pie assessment of Livingstone as he been really poor last couple of years as a player and his comments were terrible tbh.

My main point has been that there is still a lot of skill displayed by T20 cricketers both batters and bowlers and that should be respected as should the skills displayed by test match cricketers.

For people to suggest there is not time to be skillful in short format cricket is a theory I completely disagree with.

They maybe different skills displayed by good bowlers i.e keep run rate down rather than wicket taking for example but they good skills never a less.

There's not time to craft an innings was the actual criticism which has justifiable implications of when it's appropriate to apply these skills. Innings are too short to judge whether the batter is applying his skills correctly.
There's a degree of hyperbole in some comments which you appearing to appreciate.

All about opinions mate, but I actually think it’s very skillful to be able to score runs quickly/consistently without having the opportunity to play yourself in.

It’s a very skillful trait and very hard to do, and the T20 batsman who do this well imo deserve a lot of praise, but this gets lost as people too busy trying to compare red and white ball cricket rather than appreciating the skills of both

Good to hear. I suppose the acid test is not so much whether it's discussed on this board but whether the the newly recruited kids discuss it amongst themselves. That would surely be the best way to spread the gospel.
