I’ve been told a couple of times that he’s happy here but wants a salary that reflects the fact he is one of the best players in the championship.
Like any other professional would! Its a short career and if we wont pay him what hes worth somebody else will ...... the club always tries to spin it where the player is to blame !"how dare you ask for what you are worth"Sadly without a decent pay rise clarke would be an idiot to stay at safc and thats the truth of it!

Get him a new contract ffs

Should be by a distance the highest earner at the club, 100% on merit, no other player is anywhere near as important to us

Insert £25m release clause If we don’t go up within next 2 seasons, then everybody ends up happy regardless

Easy this DOF lark

Hypothetically speaking, If it was a case of selling now for 20m or next season when there's a year less on his deal for around 10m or 12m, I think I'd take the gamble of keeping him given our struggles to get a centre forward in and the lack of quality strikers around.

He's the one player who can keep us relatively competitive even if sides are doubling up on him.
If there’s no centre forward then we aren’t going up. So in the scenario you mention where we aren’t going up with or without him then you may as well cash in now. It’s why these owners are so frustrating, they do a lot of the difficult ground work and then needlessly sabotage themselves on the final pieces.

Bank a single 20m from his sale though and you've probably lost your best player and highest earner.

Do we then go and spend 10m on a centre forward and absolutely smash the wage structure to do it?

Think we all know the answer and there's no easy way out of this one so from a staying up and getting something out-of this season perspective I still say keep him.

pay clarke what he wants and extend his contract. we'll make the money back in transfer fees when he leaves / promotion money

You don’t have to spend 10m and smash the wage structure to get a striker, wish everyone would stop saying that. At this point an average championship striker would be a start. Also, this squad should never be in any danger of being relegated, Dodds is so inept that he has made people think that is a thing that could happen. So again, if the season outcome is the same we’d be better off taking more money now imo.

We’ve spent absolutely zip this summer, if we can’t give Clarke what he wants to keep him here we’ve got absolutely no hope of going up.

When we went up as champions under Reidy in his first full year we hardly bought any one that summer
Certain only Melville ( might be mistaken ) all I’m saying 😜

An average Championship striker would do, but are fans happy with that after losing Clarke and a lack of investment?

Would an average championship striker bring 10 to 15 goals to replace Clarke's goals?

How much is 'an average Championship striker' - moving club to club in the championship you're going to pay both a higher transfer fee and higher wages, hence why most championship clubs are shopping abroad or lower levels, unless they're parachute payment clubs.

Without Clarke you lose goals. One or two injures like Cirkin and this then goes from a promising talented young squad to a struggling one. As much as Dodds was poor and was in damage limitation the limitations of the squad going forward were there under Beale and Mowbray and were simply highlighted more without Clarke.

If you're not reinvesting, why sell? It makes no sense. But if you sell you have to step it up otherwise you'll very quickly go backwards whilst you wait for one of your gambles to come off.

We all love Clarke and I don’t think there’s a single fan that wants him to leave (myself included), but nobody knows what his camp are asking for. I agree he should be on a wage reflective of his performances and standing in the team but if what he wants is let’s say (hypothetically) upwards of 30k which other champ clubs are no doubt paying then we’re not going to pay it.

It’s incredibly frustrating and he isn’t the first and won’t be the last to enter into contract disputes with the club over wage (Ross Stewart) but hopefully it gets resolved sooner rather than later.

It does feel like if wages can be agreed upon, most likely club moving up and Clarkes camp coming down, then a release clause would suit all parties like you said

Some positive progress made with last lot of contract talks. Like I’ve said hundreds of times, he loves it here
He will sign a new contract when the transfer window shuts if a prem team doesn’t stump up the cash I think. We all know it means very little but if we can add a year or two onto his contract gives us security and him a wage rise. I would imagine it would have a release clause in aswell.
