Retirement

I am 8 months into early retirement got out of rat race luckily at 55
Probably spent the last 5 years of my working time wondering if I could give up a decent income and live on my FS pension and various investments S&S, bonds, Isa.
They all seem too pay over time but bottom line is u don’t need as much money once kids have flown nest and main bills are gone.
The answer is yes go for it, the bullshit about missing work makes my toes curl 😂
definitely life is too short, make the most of it while you can 👌

Retirement is a long way off for me. Honestly half doubt I'll ever properly hit it with the state of things. Reliant on one of my kids (preferably more?) being a success.

My dad just retired though. Really bad luck in getting some big health problems in his last month so hasn't been able to get on with anything he wanted to.
I'm a bit worried he seems to be spending more time on his phone and some of the comments he has made in recent months... There's hints. A few of my friends report their retired dad's falling down the Facebook rabbit hole and becoming really quite twisted.

Shame that mate, is he able to get into a routine of any sort?
I find the gym a great way to start the day bit of a workout, swim then sauna & steam, can do as little of as much as your fitness allows but a great place to have a bit crack on and feel really good when you done, plus nice free shower at the end 👍

Just out of interest, and not wanting to drag the thread off topic, how old is your Dad and your mate's Dad's?

The missing work bit gets me every time. I had what most people would consider to be a very good job, I picked whatever work I wanted to do, worked 5 over 4 so never worked Friday, managed my own diary so started and finished when i wanted, but still couldnt wait to finish.

Not sure what kind of life some people live if they will miss work, but we are all different I suppose

I don't think I will miss work but I want something to do in the next few chapters of my life. Whether that is volunteering, hobbies or something else I don't know yet but I wouldn't want to be one of those people waiting outside the pub for it to open each day.

Keep myself busy but on a day ☀️ like today after this mornings gym session it was nice to just chill in garden and read 👌 other jobs can wait.

Well done mate. Enjoy your retirement.

You can always meet up work your former workmates for a pint or whatever if you do miss them.

Just got the docs through with the option to start to take my old works pension when I turn 55 in a few mths, first time in my life I actually feel old!!
Don’t look at it that way marra ( although your probs joking )
It’s the start of another phase of your life, plenty time to get old just not yet.

Actually I wasn't joking, it does feel at the moment like the end of something rather than the start, I'm sure I'll get my head around it once I get my cheque 😂

You can still work a bit though right, even though you are retired and dipping into the pot?
You just pay tax accordingly on the income you earn/draw.

Yeah spot on, only difference is if you are working and want to put back into your pot to replenish ya stock you can only put back 10k per year.

I can’t wait to retire but I’ve got 2.5 years till I get my pension. I packed my job in at the end of May and haven’t missed working at all. Unfortunately I’m going to need to look for a new one soon purely for financial reasons.
