Test squad for Sri Lanka series

So we're going to play a makeshift opener then

What a waste of Pennington time too, make him carry drinks all July.

Then no doubt gets his injury as he's undercooked with a lack of overs.

Lawrence I don't think has ever batted above 4 for Essex. Surrey bat Pope 3, Smith 4,Foakes 5 and Lawrence 6.

Mental to just go right were going to bat you above all of them would in an England test lineup.

I hope Lawrence takes his chance, Roy was completely shafted opening against the Aussies.

I hope Lawrence takes his chance, but part of me wants them to look stupid for doing it too.

They’ll probably get away with it against Sri Lanka but doing this against a decent seam attack would be suicide

The Bazball Brains Trust firing on all cylinders again

Why not try out a new opener? It's all well and good putting Lawrence there against Sri Lanka, but given apparently all cricket is worthless apart from The Ashes, what if Crawley or Duckett are injured before the first Test? We gonna put Lawrence into open then? Why not give someone else the chance to show what they can do, and get used to Test cricket?

As for Pennington and the way they've treated him, it's just idiotic and harsh.
Why I changed my last bit of my post. As I think they might get away with it.

Shame Lees hasn't been as good as last season. He'd have deserved it
Thing is it's all well and good saying "it's only SL", but it wastes an opportunity to let someone else showcase what they can do.

Isn’t Cox a keeper?

Would have thought Robinson and Rew were ahead of him if they were looking at keeper/bats
Yeah but he's playing as specialist bat this season as he can't keep. Sure he used to open for Kent too.

Had a good season with the bat too perhaps wanting Robinson to stay playing Hundred. Stokes already seen Robinson first hand, chance for them to see someone else.

Rew is more like Foakes and won't get a chance in this England setup.

Can't exactly make Smith feel valued. Has an excellent debut series both behind and in front of the stumps after years of a merry-go-round in the WK position, then immediately they call up another WK to take a look at.

Showing all of the "empowering players, making them know they've got the spot for a while" stuff to be absolute bollocks.

I mean the selection of both Smith/Cox is a slap in the face to the best keeper bat in England this year.

Robinson took the gloves for the lions(did well there with two 80s) and was averaging mid 90s with the bat with an 85 SR, till Durham produced an appalling wicket against Worcs

Perfectly fair point, don't disagree.

But to call up a young lad, give him the gloves, hint that the position could be his for the next decade, watch him excel, then immediately call up someone else in that position to "have a look" must be undermining as fuck

Fair enough.

I've checked and Cox definitely opened in the past for Kent.

Perhaps were not just handing Lawrence the opening spot, and picking between one of them.

Shame about Pennington but I'm sure he'll get his chance.

At least Potts is still in the selectors minds but of they don't intend playing him they should at least let him play for us.

Don't even feel Lawrence is test standard, let alone as an opener
Certainly not as opener. As a "bits and pieces" type spin bowling all-rounder - batting six, bowling decent off-spin; he could (could, not will) be. His bowling for us has been superb.

They may open with Stokes mind, I think he fancies it
Aye that would also maybe make sense too.

As his games been a bit muddle recently, a clearer mindset like the other day might help him find some better form.

Lawrence then gets to play in actual position. Doesn't really offer any future planning in the event one of Crawley/Duckett get injured in a bigger series though.

I don't think that'd be awful, but it's two brutish left handers opening the batting and given this England setup is all about matchups, I reckon they'll want a left/right combo
