First cricket match I remember watching

49 years ago today, England v Australia World Cup semi-final.
Great catch by Rod Marsh in a low-scoring match at Headingley, with Gary Gilmour running riot. Remember this and then the final when West Indies won.

For me, in the days when you had to travel to Middlesbrough/Scarborough to see Yorkshire.

I recall Viv Richards having a very casual batting practice before the game on the outfield with about 20 of us youngsters in the 'slips'. He would feed catches to us. Totally different times.

I do recall Boycott being a miserable get and refusing autographs, so some things may not have changed that much.

I think the first biggish game I watched in the flesh was one of the Callers Pegasus internationals at Jesmond. Got the tickets through school. Watched me da in the NEDL a few times before that. First TV game probably a test match with Richie Benaud.

I was at that game 👍 and also recall that same summer when a mass invasion of Greenfly stopped play during a John Player League game between Yorkshire and Middlesex

I remember back in 1977 Yorkshire played a Durham Senior League XI (captained by Tom Clish) at Ropery Lane. After the game we hung around for an autograph and who should we see leaving the ground but Boycott and David Bairstow. There was a bit of a surge and a lad I knew accidentally bumped into Boycott.

"Gerroff me bloody foot!!" he barked and we all thought that would be the end of our chances but instead he got everyone to stand in an orderly queue (about 70 odd) and him and Bluey signed the lot.

First TV game I remember was Bob Massie taking 16 wickets at Lords in the 1972 Ashes series.

First live match was a benefit match for Colin Milburn in 1975 at Ropery Lane between Chester le Street and Greenside. He didn't score many and the Burnopfield Basher was last seen heading in the direction of the bar.

Was the legend that is Steve Atkinson playing 🤔 Also the man behind the 3rd man boundary fence 👍

I remember one game when it was absolutely lashing down but the sun was still out as well and dickie bird let the game continue

Has to be early 70s

I also remember those games they had up here Callers Pegasus games at Jesmond

I’ve also got a memory of itv showing Yorks v lancs championship games for a couple of hours in the 70s

I’m feeling ancient

Saw the old man play a load as a kid, but my first memory of professional cricket was Durham v Yorkshire in 92 at the Racecourse Ground. Tendulkar was their overseas and made a ton. Will never forget how easy he made it look.

Really miss the Racecourse Ground. Of course a big international stadium brings its benefits but it was so good down there when the sun shone. Wish they could still get a game there once a year.

Yeah remember that one. I used to love the Racecourse as well as Feethams, Park Drive and Grangefield Rd. Gateshead Fell was a bit nippy mind.🥶

My 1975 John Player Book Of Cricket memorably described that as ' a brilliant if somewhat poaching catch'

Must have been some Test around 03/4 ish on TV, as Hick, Cork and Hussain were playing. Remember it was at Lord's, possibly NZ or WI. First live, Durham beating Yorkshire in the 40 comp some time in the late 00s. Went with a few family friends, having only ever experienced live football before, and was surprised how seriously our friends and other spectators were taking it!

I can't recall him playing and was thinking Frank Greenshields may have been one of the openers. I do remember though that Greg Hartshorne the Aussie clean bowled Boycott for 25.
That must’ve been the anniversary match of the DSL League , maybe 75th 🤔. Think Steve Small and Paul Hibbert (Burnmoor) played and Arthur Diamond (Durham City) was skipper. Was awol from 4th year on the grounds that I would learn more at the game than Pythagoras Theory

Much better atmosphere down there (and other small grounds like Gateshead Fell, Darlo etc.), loved it down there, despite getting kicked out for taking the piss out of a Yorkshire fielder (can I f**k remember his name) for looking like Jason Donovan. About a dozen of us of singing Any Dream Will Do at him, whilst waving our arms. He took it well, stewards/police didn't.
