REM

The last two records were great for what they were IMO. If a new band popped up and knocked those two out everybody would be thrapping themselves over the next big thing. They just suffered from the fact they were made by who they were, and the bar was set so high pre mid nineties.

Saw them supporting U2 at milton keynes in 85, thought they were pretty mediocre tbh, didn't really know that much about them at the time. Loved their late 80s / early 90s stuff. Always wanted to see them again but never got round to it.

REMs top 40 songs chosen by REM.

Saw this last week.
Several media outlets pointed out they didn’t select certain obvious hits like Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion, & Shiny Happy People.
For me it was more personal than that.
They didn’t pick any of my singular favourite tracks from their 80’s albums alone.
Perfect Circle, So Central Rain, Wendell Gee, Cuyahoga, King Of Birds, You Are The Everything.
None of them made this final cut.

No nightswimming makes me doubt they know their own music that well 🙃

They didn’t have the same success or reception, but for me the last few albums harked back to their earlier stuff.

I’m jaded like, loved them, and saw them so many times. Outstanding band.
My favourites the third album. The one recorded ower here in winter and they weren’t particularly happy with it and the recording situation!

They’re one of the all time great recording artists. Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan, Bowie, Love, Wailers, Cash, Elvis P, Elvis C, Beach Boys, Hendrix, Joy Div, Marvin, Miles, Kinks, Doors, Velvets, Sly, Bowie, Clash, Hendrix, Byrds, Talking Heads, Roxy, Replacements, Television, Isaac Hayes etc etc. I think only people with cloth ears would argue against REM being considered in those sort of echelons.

Without doubt one of the top 5 American bands of all time.

One of the best times I saw them was after Bill left …

I was at all 3 gigs they did at Stirling Castle & then combined it with a road trip around northwest Scotland for a few days afterwards.
One of the best weeks of my life.

Thinking back to the Stirling Castle gigs the abiding memory is actually a non musical one.
Michael Stipe halting the gig for a couple of minutes & asking the audience to turn around 180 degrees to witness the stunning orange-pink sunset the band were getting to perform in front of.
One of those great random natural human moments, well away from the pre-rehearsed script.
Class.
(Only happened one of the three nights mind.
The other two it either pissed down or was cloudy & miserable as fuck)

Sat in Alicante airport on way home with a beer and Green album in my ears.

Absolutely tremendous
Out of Time was the first vinyl I ever got.

Great band, some of their albums are very challenging mind.
That run of albums late 80s early 90s hasn't T been surpassed by many mind .
