No he isn’t.
He’s said in the past FM convinced him to focus on coaching rather than playing when he was a teenager. He was coaching at Preston in 2011.

I was more under the impression his playing of the game gave him the inspiration to study coaching at university in his teens. Fifteen years or so ago, not 2017.
