Bit more work done yesterday, going to sow beetroot and spring onions today.
My potatoes have popped out of the ground, beetroot and spring onions going in next weekend. Got my plot inspection on the 2nd June but looking at some of the other plots, should sail through. Finally after all the rain I managed to get some work done myself this week/weekend.
Tomatoes in the polytunnel, beetroot directly sown, windowsill started peas in and some directly sown, felt great to be there in the sun at last.
I inherited a storage box full of 2 litre pop bottles with the bottom cut off. I presume these are used for protecting brassicas? Strawberry plants seem to be doing really well.Nightmare this morning.
I didn't cover my cabbages or sprout plants that I put into the ground last week.
Feckin' wood pigeons have had a good chomp away at them.
So just as a reminder, put netting over young brassicas in or to keep those bastards out.
Hardened off and planted yesterday.Depends if they are bush or cordon marra.
You should be able to tell pretty early on with how tall they grow.
Cordons will grow taller then the bush varieties quickly.
I feel your pain. Planted a load of pointy cabbages on Friday and called down not long ago to see a couple of wood pigeons having a feast. They’ve pulled a couple out and chomped the rest, netted the ones I put back. Complacently on my part not doing it in the first place.Nightmare this morning.

Are the raspberries summer or autumn fruiting?ALSO - Help please. Any idea why my raspberries look all shrivelled up and knackered? Could it be frost damage - we did have a cold few nights quite a while after it had already put leaves out? If so, what can I do about it?
Autumn fruiting. Are the raspberries summer or autumn fruiting?
Did you cut them back in the winter?
I have autumn ones in the ground, and I always cut them back to 6" off the ground in the winter. They are now growing back canny - about 12" high now.
Get them back by stealing all their eggs?My hens have got out and chomped at all my corn plants, 25 of them ffs. Are they pretty hardy if their stalk is intact or is that the end of them?
They’ve stamped on/dug up my corgettes and brassicas I planted yesterday too. Devastated![]()
Looks like chicken on the menu there mate. Sorry to hear that.My hens have got out and chomped at all my corn plants, 25 of them ffs. Are they pretty hardy if their stalk is intact or is that the end of them?

Contemplated stamping on them when I walked in and saw what they’d done!Get them back by stealing all their eggs?
Not far from it tbh, little shithawks.Looks like chicken on the menu there mate. Sorry to hear that.
cauliflowers and sprouts, plant as normal and as the get bigger (around 12") heel them in around the base. It gives compact firm heads to the caulis and tight firm sprouts.Leeks in today along with spring onions. Pea frames assembled and some mange tout planted. Got given some cauliflower plants from a couple of plots down so make a bed and plant them on Friday. Is it right that brassicas like firm soil?
No fruit on my pear and plum trees this year. The plum tree was laden last year. What variety are those? The ones I put in raised beds were a failure but the ones in the ground produced canny numbers.
My garlic has been a massive disappointment this year and unless things improve it looks like my tomatoes will be too. Nothing seems to have done well at all this year tbh.
Nicola. I thought the Charlotte were going to be ready to pull first but they are still going strong. What variety are those? The ones I put in raised beds were a failure but the ones in the ground produced canny numbers.
