Joe Root calls for a reduction in county cricker

That example of Gloucestershire having a Friday home T20 followed by a Sunday Championship game in Scarborough is pathetic.

In days gone by teams have travelled, by car, from Yorkshire to Sussex at the 6.30 conclusion of a drawn game, with a view to starting the next day at 11.

Will the reduction in games result in a reduction in players salary ? I don’t imagine so !

The weather curtails a lot of matches and most players are standing around doing virtually nothing in the field all day.

Fair enough the bowlers earn their keep and the travelling must be hard work but most get 6 months off if they aren’t internationals.

Worse even that that, there were countless examples of teams finishing a day of Championship cricket on the Saturday night, travelling somewhere else in the country for a Sunday League game and then returning to the Championship venue the same night for the resumption of the Championship game on the Monday morning.

Cant argue with the popularity of the short forms but they completely coach the character out of the game. Bland flat pitches and encouraging 20 over games of 200 plays 200. I don't think it's as exciting as a low scoring test match in conditions that really test your skill and mentality.
