CC : Durham v Essex

Now that it's over all I feel is a sense of relief and puzzlement.

What's gove wrong with our bowlers? And more specifically the bowlers we expect to take wickets, Potts and Raine, haven't.

Then there's Carse. Pretty useless. A demonstration that just being fast is not good enough.

Of them all only Parky has performed ahead of expectations and maybe Coggers too.
That’s along my way of thinking as well
Carse was abject at Warks as well but perhaps the wicket was quite dead from a seam bowling viewpoint.
Full marks for Parkys persistence however and in Eurovision parlance nil points for Borthwick notwithstanding that it may have been a controversial dismissal

The YTS lads: Rob's been working with/in place of Marty at times over the past couple of years - he is/was a journalism student, I think. The other lad is a Durham uni student who's just handed in his dissertation on Burmese cricket.

Club have moved away from BBC, all in house stuff now for the live stream,.

Back home after a very tedious day. Got to be honest I was shocked at Essex today. I expected them to go T20 mode first thing and then make a game of it, shocked they batted on long after 110 overs leaving us 59 overs to bat with a deficit of around 120, game basically dead. Is it any wonder people don't come to county cricket and the top knobs clearly don't like it? I appreciate teams have to think of themselves but there was absolutely no danger of them losing the game, they had nothing to lose. The bowling of Carse continues to concern me, I just don't get it, don't really need to say anything else really, my views on what England do to bowlers is well documented on here. No concerns with the other fast bowlers. I don't think they bowled badly to be honest. Borthwick just seems like a walking wicket at the moment and continues to concern me. We remain a solid side overall and it's going to take a very good side to beat us. I'm alright with how things have started.

I was hoping in the second innings they swapped borthwick and ackerman so we had a l/h r/h opening partnership again
We've 10 days off now so some time for for Badger to readjust.Problem is we haven't a dedicated batting coach although both Lees and Ackerman could and would provide guidance. However, suspect Jones will be recalled for next game-Hants(A)

For me, with the time that’s been taken out of the game and the pudding of a pitch you are not going to get 10 Essex wickets falling without the scoreboard pressure of a balanced chase. And you are only going to get that from where we were overnight by contrivance. That seems to have gone completely out of fashion in the championship in recent years although those of us old enough to have grown up on three day remember that it was pretty much the only way to get a result half the time. Did either side offer and the other blow them out? Or is it just so much not the done thing that it wouldn’t even be considered? In which case, you can’t blame Essex getting a bit of batting practice. But it’s crap as a spectator spectacle indeed.

Will Gidman and James Hildich are batting coaches

I agree it made no sense for them to bat on after their 3rd batting bonus point. There was no way they could lose from there so why bat on instead of trying to win?

It was clearly a massive long shot for them to skittle us on that track for say 150 and then knock off the excess runs, but they never even tried which was strange.

I sometimes think that they knew it was a draw and were happier sitting in the warm dressing room than fielding.

That was one theory a few of us mentioned, though the Essex fans we spoke to were pissed off about it.

Overall I'm happy with our solid start, we look competitive and as I keep saying it will take something special to beat us.

I'm pleased Hilditch is still there because if he wasn't the bloke i spoke to on Saturday before play must have thought i was a right old duffer.
Although he has had his hair cut.

Raine looks an average League bowler at the moment, but he will pull through I’m sure. I’m more concerned about Borthwick’s first team place.

We need a couple more batsmen to strike at similar rates to Robinson and Bedingham if Ackerman is to continue to play the anchor role

It's what the yoof of today want, innit 😉 .

The yoof don’t watch proper cricket though ;)

James Hilditch is still at the club.

Essex didn’t need any contrivance to give themselves a chance (granted, a slim one) of victory today. As GMN1F alluded to, had they gone mental for 20 overs this morning they could’ve built a lead of about 100 and then inserted us trying to induce a collapse with around 70 overs still left to play.

There was only a small chance of victory, but zero chance of a defeat so they had nothing to lose.
Thanks.Wholly underwhelming.
Neither of whom have any experience of early order championship batting technique

Hilditch was our batting coach last year, when we achieved the highest batting bonus points in our history.
