CC : Durham v Essex

Tedious day and it was absolutely freezing from mid afternoon. Thought we bowled well earlier in the day which I mentioned then lost our way with the changes. I continue to be unimpressed with Carse, I'm just not seeing it at all with him, maybe someone can help me out here? Bags of potential but at present his central contract isn't warranted. Few lbw shouts which I'm a bit baffled by but as I keep saying for years, the umpires most of the time just guess. Essex happy to plod along and with the forecast tomorrow it's looking very much like a draw which isn't the end of the world.

I thought Essex were very poor in that final session, in many respects I hope it does piss down all day tomorrow because they’ll rue not trying to force the issue a bit more. We had bowlers in their third and fourth spells of the day and at no point did they try and push the pace. It’ll cost them bonus points and hopefully it costs them win points. Very negative cricket and I hope it comes back to bite them.

Oh I do agree about Essex but they just seemed happy to plod along which isn't going to make a game of it. Clearly that's their game plan as they never changed from that mindset all day.

Not one of the more memorable days at the Riverside. Was quite surprised Essex didn't up the tempo considering tomorrow's forecast although the Met Office's guesswork has it improving slightly for the afternoon.

Bit of a tedious day in the freezing cold. Only saw 3 wickets fall all day which is not what you want from a Durham perspective. However Essex didn't seem too keen on forcing the issue. I got the impression they were going to give it a bit of a go after tea but once Khushi was out they seemed to retreat back into their shells. We missed a few very hard chances which if they had stuck could have put us on a roll. Loads of LBW appeals all turned down, easily into double figures. Some looked purely speculative, but others close, but still nothing given. Just wasn't our day but kept plugging away. Overall I got the impression that this was a stalemate as neither side could get the upper hand on the other. With tomorrow looking like a washout it would seem that a draw is on the cards.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - the rain NEVER saves Durham…

I wonder if they saw the forecast and were happy to take the batting points and draw, knowing the wicket was fairly good. By taking a more aggressive route they could have tried to force a result and put themselves under pressure by losing cheap wickets. Forcing a result against us at home would be fairly hard to do with a whole day likely to be lost to rain

Essex game plan was correct imo. Bat big in the 1st innings as the priority, foregoing extra bonus points, gain a substantial 1st innings lead putting Durham under scoreboard pressure in their 2nd innings.

Going to a cold one today so wrap up.

We have made a decision that we will take in the first session and it is uncomfortably cold abandon ship and watch it on YouTube

Very possible.
Not a chance of any play today

What odds would you give me? ;)

Good to see they have taken my feedback on board. It only takes 10 seconds to compose and send a tweet. Let's hope that continues because it helps massively.

It does and it’s more baffling than anything to me when you consider how professional their coverage of games is on the live stream, how professional their interviews with players are and the production of promo videos and whatnot.

All of that excellent social media performance, yet they forget the important things like squadlists before games and prospects of play, etc.

I worry that it’s a nod to what Bostock said, that financially it would be better to play Championship games in the bubble. Meaning keeping matchgoing supporters up to date becomes secondary.

Are you close to the ground?

Another executive decision. We are staying put. Hopefully get some play late afternoon
About 4 miles, if it’s raining here (which it is) it’s usually raining at the ground.

Best to hope for is a couple of hours after tea but I think I’ll be sticking to the footy on Sky this afternoon
