Drinking in Sunderland City Centre - restored

Sad news that one of the town's pubs' characters, Chris Palmer, has died. Regular in the Vaults but seen everywhere else as well. Grumpy bugger at times but a definite "character".

May be wrong on this but was he Safchibs on here?

Yes I think he was . Rarely posted but I think it was him, as Palmer was a big Hibs fan.

Funny fucker like, proper grouchy sometimes, but a decent chap and very well known. Knew his ale like. Had a couple of goes at me before

Scrumpy producers all over the world will be losing a fortune now

Yes we was Safchibs. A right antagonist miserable kernt most of the time, loved SAFC, Hibs, Punk, Cider and hater the Mags. A good friend and certainly a bit of a character.

I have known him since about 1990 and back in the day we would travel up to Scotland together on some Boots the Chemist £5 train promotion and he would go to watch Hibs and I would go to see Rangers. I don’t think he ever got a round in during the time I have known him 😄

Don't think ya could of timed that any worse.

Stonegate pubs just announced they're having to go to the bank and re-negotiage their 2.5 mil debt. They have the Chesters also which is another big one. Board Inn near Doxy also.

Grants end for the pub industry starting Good Friday so just going to get worse unfortunately. Tories have done fuck all and just letting the industry decay.
Think that might be 2.6 billion not million.
Eye watering sums.

Death is only the beginning for hospitality atm.

All the chairs are stacked up in Yates when I’ve just passed. Not sure dumping the food offering in there will work mind.

And Keel Tavern has a smashed door….high wind or naughty five fingered discount types?

And that Indian our lass says I’m not allowed in, is advertising Sunday roast dinners….it’s like an alternate universe 🙄

I've had to check everything to see if you were right and you are!!
They've only been open a month and they're resorting to desperate measures already putting 50% off their food and doing Sunday roasts. Some fine dining that is.

But yeah Stonegate's situation summarises the hospitality situation and you're stupid as an oaf to suggest otherwise - When you have The Borough, The Chesters and The Board Inn and you find yourself 2.6 billion in debt that's not the establishments. That's debts they've racked up since Day 1 of COVID, all they've had help wise over lockdown is business grants which doesn't even cover the out of date kegs they've had to pour out, still paying business tax on top of that and VAT. Nowadays min wage has skyrocketed, utilities have skyrocketed and the last bit of help they're getting ends on Good Friday.
And it's spiralled out of control and its the same for every business nearly.

Which one? Who would go to an Indians for a Sunday dinner??
Saba Maison De Luxe….our lass went shortly after it opened and said he was full of himself, it was expensive & pretentious so she barred me from going 😂
I'm anywhere for an easy life so I’m not putting up much of a fight

He's now running 50% off the main menu Mon & Weds apparently, and he’s decided to knock out a Sunday roast

He’s chasing his own arse by the looks of it; the other week he was after the football crowd and was telling them to pop in before the game but dropped a clanger cos he didn’t know when the match kicked off and was closing as the lunchtime match came out. Sounds like a 🤡 sadly

I've seen videos where the DJ is canny loud.

There's a video of his black cars parked out the front with their headlights on and that put me off as well.

Yeah, you get the impression he thinks it’s classy where the fact is it just looks crass and tacky

And if his food was that authentic he should be packed out with people who eat it on Subcontinental India; yet that doesn’t appear to figure in his customer base at all.

PHO has a constant flow of folk who would eat their food back in the motherland and tbf it’s always been spot on. Bit chaotic at arriving all together but that’s not the end of the world when you’re getting an authentic menu

Too much choice in Sunderland for one restaurant to try and mug people off. It’ll wither & die sadly
