North Stand extension

Easy to be wise after the event but extending after only 3 seasons was too quickly. It was only several years earlier that we couldn't even sell out Roker Park

Better to have a longer period of demand outstripping supply and prove that we had the fanbase to sustain the extra capacity. Especially to judge the crowds when we're struggling.
Absolute bollocks really.

A well ran and good SAFC needs a bigger capacity. Just cos we’ve been ran shit shouldn’t change we needed to increase capacity.

I wasn't criticising sunderland. Sunderland have very good support but it's very difficult to get 50,000 plus crowds every other week. There are a handful of clubs who could do that.

Sunderland is a big club, no doubt. Excellent support too.

In my book I wrote of England's biggest clubs, I have Sunderland as Englands 15th biggest. So by that logic you should be in the prem right now.
What measure did you use for that?

I don't think there are 14 better supported English clubs, but football isn't all about support. Leeds would be lower than Sunderland based on most objective measures I can think of. They've won less, they have had consistently lower crowds throughout their history.

Still meeting me at Stoke statue with your SAFC season ticket ya massive pleb?

Cost nearly as much to extend the north stand as it did the full ground

I remember going to a reserve game when the roof was off and got soaked. Might have been Milton Nunez debut
Your right but it was Man Utd Reserves the night the roof was off. It was the season before when we got 36,000 v Liverpool Reserves, I took this photo on the night

15th ? who are the 14 above and how have you defined it ?

Lots of factors, including potential too.

Man utd
Man city
Liverpool
Arsenal
Chelsea
Everton
Villa
Spurs
Newcastle (sorry if you disagree, just my opinion)
Leeds
West ham
Notts forest (2x European cup)
Celtic
Rangers

All bigger clubs in the UK than Sunderland in my opinion, but doesn't mean I'm right.

Can't think if any others ro be honest.

Just my.opinion that's all.

Celtic and Rangers 😂😂😂😂

So you can only think of 12 really? Do you not have a copy of your book?

I'm guessing you included Derby County?

Just been watching premier pressures and they are talking about extending the north stand to what it is now.

I can't remember at the time (was too young to be bothered about it at the time) but were we selling out regularly? Did this extension make sense because in the fullness of time the ground would probably be the right size without it.
Waste of money, nobody wants to sit there, always empty when away fans were at other end. Why they moved them there ? SW corner was the Fulwell End, deed now!

Agree, 49k is too big for a badly ran Sunderland. If we were a mid table premier league club it would be fine. That isn't an unrealistic aspiration now and even less so at the turn of the millennium when it was extended.

Sunderland got more in league one than Leeds and city.
Plus it's not 49k, the capacity is about 45-46k with segregation

We can sell thar out with a decent PL team

It's not a published book it's my own list.

Derby aren't as big as Sunderland.

Take forests European cups away and Sunderland are bigger than them, certainly support wise.

But European cups add weight.

Leeds have more potential than Sunderland in my view, but Sunderland have had better crowds and more trophies so on reflection you could argue Sunderland are bigger than leeds. West ham have a massive fanbase but haven't won much.

I mean Sunderland being bigger than forest/leeds and even west ham has some credibility.

The others on the list are slam dunks though, in my view. Though sunderland have 2 more league titles than Newcastle.

Why not Derby then?

Agreed. Newcastle too. League titles hold weight and all that.

If we do get promoted a section of the away supporters have to be in the lower tier so roll on that one if it comes about in the near future. Because we haven't been in the PL for so long we are no longer exempt like the Mags are having all the away fans in upper tier. Capacity then might be closer to 47.5-48k.

Leeds 😆

F#cking mentalists on here at times, let’s stop fans being able to watch some games so the ground looks full more often. The extension has meant thousands and thousands of supporters have had the chance to watch games they wouldn’t have been able to otherwise, it blows my mind we have supporters who don’t think that’s a good thing.
Good post. I had a ST for 20+ years but don’t anymore, however I like the fact that if I want to go I can still get a ticket, even last minute. Based on current attendances most games at the original capacity would be close to selling out.
