I wanted to go on last tour, but it is a lot of money

Thing is I don’t care paying whatever for flights and accommodation but when you get there and drink and food is through the food it’s tough

Went to NZ years ago, not sure I can afford it

I’d kill for a Sri Lanka test tour!

As long as it’s not a dry state drinks in India with your mates can be class. You can do Goa or something en route too.

Agree with you on Sri Lanka mind. So crap that that was a Covid series.
 
Anyone with experience in India got any tips for avoiding Delhi belly? Appreciate I'm spamming this thread with questions but better to be prepared with a trip like this i reckon - and seen conflicting advice online

I didn't get it too bad and only on the third day (which was the day I was stuck on a bus for 9 hours). I never had the trots, just a stomach ache. Our lass got it bad after eating a salad on the second to last day we were there. Avoid ice in your drinks and aforementioned salads.

Probs cant like...I think its the same most time you spend a fair chunk of time somewhere...I had a month in Mexico last year and had the shits bad a few days...most westeners were the same

Spent 6 weeks working there and never got a thing. Was quite strict with no salad, no water etc.

Tip I got was take mouthwash with you, take a swig before you get in the shower, spit it out when you get out.

Already mentioned but, avoid ice. Seen it unloaded onto the pavement in huge chunks.
Avoid salads cos of what they're washed in and what may have been used for fertilizer.
Don't worry too much, whatever you do, there's always a good chance of the shits.
Avoid restaurants with no one in them, as food could have been sitting around for ages.
Be a bit more vegetarian, if you can, the masala dosas are superb, but are generally breakfast food. Also a lot of fresh veggie pakhoras and potato vadas at street stalls. Go to the ones with queues. Veggie samosas canny as well.

Thanks for this. I was leaning towards going veggie and just eating meat at the more high end places I think. Love Indian food so looking forward to seeing what actual Indian food from India is like!

I eat meat all the time in India. But some of the top hotels have buffets that the food may have been out for a bit. Go somewhere with an a la carte, (meaning not buffet ) no matter how basic, with a high turnover.
Don't overthink it.
There's delicious bakeries with pastries etc.
A delicious street meal was an omelette with chilli and onions sandwiched between two chapatis, all cooked on the street in front of you.
I got the shits one time in Chandigarh when I saw a bloke freshly squeezing oranges. I paid for a glass and he poured it from a plastic jug. Stupidly I drank it. Could have been he'd added water, the glass, the jug was dirty, or something totally unrelated.
After that I ate tandoori chicken in a very basic but full Sikh bar, where I was the only foreigner. Absolutely delicious food, you had to walk through the very hot, small, not too clean kitchen to go to the not so clean squat toilet, and I was fine. Do what you can, but it's pot luck.
 
Some random info for anyone interested in 3rd, 4th and 5th Tests
Flights from Mumbai to Rajkot about £50.
Take a train from Rajkot to Ahmedabad, about 4 hours, loads per day.
Fly from Ahmedabad direct to Ranchi, on Indigo for £55 or £60 on the 22nd February (not every day).

Then after the Test, take a train to Delhi for about £45 1AC, or £22 for 2AC. Or fly for £50 or so.
From Delhi, take a train to Amritsar, 10 trains a day or so, various quality and prices. There's a week or so between tests, so time to see the Golden Temple and the truly bizarre border opening and closing ceremony at Wagah, 20 miles away
A taxi from Amritsar for the 200km ride to Kangra at the bottom of the hill for Dharamshala is about £50, quoted below:-

I think that there's a direct bus from Delhi to Dharamshala as well.

For those that haven't taken one, it is great to take at least one long train trip in India. 1AC, 2AC, or 3AC or comfortable.

Get a sleeper if you really need to save money experience India and don't mind cramped carriages, but you should have guaranteed use of the bed (6 per compartment, 2 in the aisle) between 10p.m and 6a.m, I think.
But, I have been in the same compartments and counted 20 odd during the day.

Flights Delhi to Kangra are £226 o/w, the day before the test. Kangra is at the bottom of the hill for Dharamshala.

*Nee idea if this website is genuine or not. But I think that these prices are possible.

Amritsar is a brilliant place. I got a 1 hour flight between there and Delhi for £35. The train was £20 and 8 hours so paying £15 more was a no-brainer for us. There's a train from Amritsar to Pathankot then a toy train to Kangra, but would need to check it's running as one of the bridges was swept away in a monsoon 18 months ago. We got a 2nd class sleeper train Amritsar to Pathankot then the bus between Pathankot and Dharamshala (4 hours). Wish I'd done a few more of those instead of AC/EC, seemed much more like the real India (avoid 3rd class sleeper though). If I was getting a taxi Amritsar to Dharamshala I'd ask the driver to stop at a roadside dhaba halfway (and buy his dinner as a thank you).

If anyone wants a top hotel in Amritsar then Surestay Best Western in Heritage Walk is top notch. Bang in the middle of all the sights, clean and modern.
