England test squad for India

Depends really.

Leach hasn’t played for a while, if he’s fit then he’s first choice
Do they see Rehan as the spinning all rounder already?

Fine with a longer term view of course, but we’re playing at least 2 spinners and he’s probably the most in form and he can bat well (his batting average > bowling in FCC)
Given he played in Pakistan I think Ahmed will be picked, not sure they'll see him as an all rounder yet.

I'm not dead set against Dawson playing though he hasn't impressed me internationally in the past. I take the argument that he's better than he was I just think if he's not going to play most/all of the games then it's a waste of his time going.

Get that argument. Given form however, I could see him playing at 7 and bowling a lot of overs, he’s not a mystery spinner but handy in a 2-3 man spin attack. If he’s not at 7/8 they need Rehan there

Ben Stokes (Durham – captain)
Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire)
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Gus Atkinson (Surrey)
Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Shoaib Bashir (Somerset)
Harry Brook (Yorkshire)
Zak Crawley (Kent)
Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire)
Ben Foakes (Surrey)
Tom Hartley (Lancashire)
Jack Leach (Somerset)
Ollie Pope (Surrey)
Ollie Robinson (Sussex)
Joe Root (Yorkshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)
Thats a lightweight looking squad to tour India. I wonder how fit Stokes is going to be?

Sure I saw Dawson get interviewed pre-WC and he virtually said he didn't want picking for a one off tour, when realistically it would be a couple of tests, then back to seamer friendly conditions for the summer. Couldn't justify giving up white ball contracts for it.

Great so our side is completely unbalanced yet again. He has to bat 3 then.

But were going to use Root as the the third spinner aren't we?

Whereas India and Aus both used 3 mainline spinners, mind were not taking that very seriously anyway. Dawson should be there and playing at 7/8.

Thought lees might of sneaked a spot in the squad. Good season unrewarded. Would not play in the 1st 11 but thought he had a chance of the 16

Probably for the best he misses this one given the likely pitches and opposition. If one or both of the openers has a shocking series and start next summer badly he should be back in contention

A seamer who has never played a test Jimmy who looked totally unthreatening in home conditions. Then 2 injury prone bowlers they are a seamer short.

Stokes is killing the balance not being able to bowl. So guessing they are playing Leach & Ahmed most games and 2 seamers can only see a drubbing unless Root makes a ton of runs.

So Woakes overseas test career is finished then.

Duckett
Crawley
Stokes
Root
Brook
Bairstow
foakes (Wk)
Ahmed
Wood
Robinson
leach

Though in all honesty, dont think it matters if we play 6 batters or 7, 2,3,4 seamers. Whatever combination we pick will probably lose the series on flat pitches or mickey mouse wickets depending on how the 1st test goes

A very grown up response by him, ad opposed to some other players over the years

He’s had a go and wasn’t convincing at Test level.

Doesn’t strike me as a Bazball type

I know you don't expect seamers to bowl much but given their fitness records I'm not sure I'd be too keen on Wood and Robinson being my only two seam options

Never seen Hartley or Bashir surely Dawson and Jacks were safer picks as well as balancing the side better. I’d have took another quick as well, is Tongue injured? Squad looks small for a 5 match series in India

Were backing Ahmed and why they've not picked Dawson, Hartley and Bashir won't play at all unless we get an injury. Below is what I expect the team to be.

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Bairstow
Ahmed
Wood
Leach
Anderson

I'd have Stokes or Bairstow at 3 and Foakes in at 7. Jacks is not a good enough bowler as second spinner. Ahmed is a decent bat too at 8, he bats 6 in CC. So get Jacks non inclusion.

I still would have had Dawson in there. Really we need 3 frontline spinners but because Stokes can't bowl we've got to play another seamer, our batting was horrendous last time so really need to bat till 7 too.

He’s played a whopping 3 tests, the last one 6 years ago. He’s improved quite a lot and deserves another chance
He seems always up for the challenge and giving his all, I like him
