How come so few people turn up for midweek games?

I couldn't be arsed and not bothered one bit if some people find it pathetic or sad.

Definitely thought that a home win was on the cards but was prepared to miss that.

Was over the moon when that final whistle went and I didn't have a 45 minute journey home.

I stayed away because of the weather warning. I live in Weardale and don’t have a car great in the snow so I didn’t wanna end up stuck as I’m at work 8am tomorrow.

I have noticed a bit of stick off the mags like. I’d have taken it to heart if a) they didn’t give away 10k free tickets because their crowds were shit and b) they admitted they only get a full house at the minute because they are winning games thanks to a dodgy sovereign state spending fortunes. No Saudi = no crowds. Shameful to brag about it tbh.
10k free SEASON TICKETS
Get it right mate.
That will always be a source of embarrassment for them whenever they try to go on about attendance or giving free tickets to school.

- Cold weather
- CoL crisis biting hard for some and having to prioritise work over a handful of games (midweek ones in particular)
- Us having gone backwards football wise since the end of last season
- The opposition last night - no disrespect for Huddersfield but had it been leeds there'd have been about 5k more there
- Bus strikes still ongoing - makes it a massive chew on for some that rely on them, combine that with finishing work and then having to source alternative travel then it's a faff on many can't be arsed with

Last night was on Sky wasn't it? Combine this with any of the above factors.

living 160 miles away means midweek home games are a thing of the past for me esp when it is on TV. I have a season ticket and missing 2-3 home games a year is standard. I suspect many fall into this category as i pass loads on the road south of North Yorkshire when travelling up. Like a previous poster said our fan base don't all live in Sunderland.

Aye all Championship games that aren't 3pm Saturdays are at least red button.
Aye, thought so.

A none diehard half debating going realistically isn't going to be arsed getting a ticket for £30 plus quid if it's on TV when its baltic outside, the opposition are crap, there's no buses (if needed) and it's a school night.

I was there as usual and it felt like a chore even just walking 30 mins to and from the ground from SR4 lastnight due to the fact it was utterly shite.

This isn't new anyway and it used to be even worse, I remember the McCarthy years when there were just over 20k in the ground for midweek league games in this division V the likes of Crewe and Plymouth at home.
We have to be one of the worst home supports in the country for atmosphere ratio to people their mind. 3 out of 4 stands don’t even get animated.
I’m
There were large parts in the first half where if you closed your eyes if could have been a minutes silence being observed.

Second half was still lifting, just a few angry collective shouts now and again.

Atmosphere was flat as a pancake.

The reality is there not as many empty seats as people think, the north lower bit holds around 1500/2000, so when that’s 70% empty it looks crap but still only around 1200 empty seats in total, the rest of the lower bowl was probably 90% full which would leave another 3k seats empty which is again very noticeable but still well over 30k inside last night, for a midweek championship game its tremendous support

So few? Are you on glue ? There was almost 38k there ffs.

If you'd have been there you'd know that wasn't really the case though. Let's just say the lower bowl holds around 36k. You could have taken everyone from the Premier Concourse and the away end and stuck them down below and there still would have been 1000s of empty seats.

The atmosphere is another conversation altogether. I didn't expect it to be bouncing on a Wednesday night v Huddersfield but it was played out in near silence last night. It's been really poor all season. I just wish they'd bring the away fans back downstairs because at least, if nothing else you get a bit home/away fans reaction to each other.

Is it an indicator of how many who attend the SOL travel from outside of the town/city?

If you're travelling over from Co. Durham / South Tyneside etc on a work day many people may struggle to get there on a night.

But then again if Roker Park was crammed on night matches then the same would apply there.

North Lower is always the least populated and the last place to sell out, the antics of guests above put people off being there.

Catch 22 though innit. It wasn't as if we were given anything to get animated about watching last night. Nothing positive anyway. Apathy sets in.

Walking away after I said to the bairn "if we had stayed at home we'd at least be warm by now" and he agreed. We'll still do it next time though. Gluttons for punishment.

As for money being tight, I have said all along that your average football fan is immune to the cost of living crisis. Attendance at matches is at an all time high. Rotherham, a club of traditionally small crowds with negligible away support, brought a decent away following.
Yeah but Rotherham was a Saturday game n not midweek n not the run up to Xmas.
Was just meaning its a lot easier to duff a midweek game now n stay at home n watch it on a stick rather than travel miles for some ppl n get in after midnight to have work the next day n plus saving a few bob.
