I’m most excited for Gaslight Anthem, but there’s quite a lot there for me - Black Pumas, DJ Shadow, Gizzard, Shabazz, Taking Back Sunday, Swifty and Mountain Goats

For completeness, I should add that Billy Bragg's "The Roaring Forty" is out tomorrow (a compilation spanning his 40 year career) and, at the other end of the scale, Wargasm release their debut.

Emma Anderson: the solo debut from the one time Lush co-lead. Quite 90s shoegaze/indie. Nice enough.
For no good reason, I wasn't expecting it to sound anything like Lush, but I found the songs did have a Lush feel about them. I've since read that many of the songs were going to be worked on by the band but when the reunion disintegrated, they became the starting point of this solo record. I think it's very good.

So, my review of the week's new and newish stuff I've been listening to....

Sofia Kourtesis: pretty enjoyable electronica with vocals.
Wild Nothing: quite dull. Sort of stlised indiepop, like a less interesting Postal Service.
Shabazz Palaces: alt hip-hop. Only 7 tracks and 24 minutes so more of a mini-album. Pretty good.
Taylor Swift: arguably her finest album given the re-recorded as she wants it treatment. Very good!
Titanic: one of several bands the excellent Mabe Fratti is involved in. Sort of jazz plus cello with her vocals. Really good.
DJ Shadow: very much back to basics after the guest heavy albums he's tended to make recently. Instrumental hiphop and electro that never fails to be interesting.
ØXN: as mentioned above, one of Radie Peat's non-Lankum projects. It's very much in the mould of the doom folk made by lots of Scandis. It's exceptionally good.
Angie McMahon: her first album in 4 years and a bit of a cracker. Exceptional songs. If The National made this, the broadsheets would be giving it 11/10.
Jerry Leger: veteran friend of and sometimes life member of Cowboy Junkies. This is a lovely laidback album of not quite country songs.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard: well, that's odd. The short version of the tracks are serviceable, the long versions dull. They need to get back to what they're good at.
The Kills: their first in a while (7 years). It's a good album of indie rock stuff with hooky songs.
Gazelle Twin: dark, haunting stuff. I guess I'd bracket Gazelle Twin alongside Fever Ray. Really good.
Catrin Finch and Aoife ni Bhriain: Catrin on harp, Aoife on fiddle in a Welsh/Irish crossover folk album. It's very good.
Black Pumas: continues on with their soul/rock hybrid of earlier work. Another excellent album.
Video Age: decent enough indie rock, nothing original but solid songs.
Mint Field: Spanish alt types, a little bit electronic, a little bit guitar. Decent.
The Serfs: sleazy electro rock boogie. This is a fun album.
Dirt Buyer: pretty good. Country flecked alt rock really. One to watch.
The Mountain Goats: the usual template, indie rock/pop with intriguing lyrics. I believe it's linked to an earlier album is some way.
Bonnacons of Doom: female fronted psych rock from a Liverpool based band. A little bit gothic. I like this.
The Gaslight Anthem: where's the exciteent? Solid enough songs but quite ploddy for the most part.
Ora Cogan: Canadian singer-songwriter doing something in the gap between alt rock and Americana. This is a very good album.
Connie Lovatt: solo debut from a long time Bill Callahan collaborator (he appears). It's a lovely album.
Mellt: the sound of young Wales. This has a sort of ramshackle SFA vibe to it. Mostly sung in Welsh.

Album of the week: ØXN and Angie McMahon tie for the title this week. Both will be in my yearly top however many. Radie Peat will be in there twice.

Try Viji and New Age Doom also sir

Correct - primarily the tremendous All Hail West Texas, where there's a track (one of my favorites) called Jenny. Though the same Jenny has been mentioned in a couple of other songs over the years, most recently in a track on Transcendental Youth. I think I read a couple of other AHWT characters are revisited but I haven't listened yet so can't confirm.

There are new releases tomorrow from Actress, Bar Italia, not Black Grape (metacritic say so but Amazon say Jan 19th), Hilary Woods, Hotline TNT, Jimmy Buffett, Jockstrap (debut remix), Kevin abstract, Kevin Drew, King Creosote, Laura Veirs, Lol Tolhurst x Budgie x Jacknife Lee, Marnie Stern, Matmos, Peace, Semisonic, The Embassy, The Struts, Van Morrison, Jessi Colter, Gong, Danielle Howle, William Eggleston, Drop Nineteens, Sarah Davachi, Jeffrey Martin, Half Stack and Empty Country.

Just Laura Viers out of that lot for me. I feel like she’s lost her quirkiness the last couple of albums (although others seem to have loved them) so hoping for a return to form.
