Sounds right mate.If it was against Spain it was possibly the same match I went to.
About 1980 ?
He was a great winger Armstrong. He never seemed to miss a match for Middlesbrough injured either.Had to Google him to make sure (Millsy)
.
Thought 'spike' was great for us - played 358 consecutive matches for Boro.
He used to post on a Southampton forum a few years ago - had a few conversations with him about his Boro days
Absolutely. He was a great winger Armstrong. He never seemed to miss a match for Middlesbrough injured either.
They sold him and it was a downward spiral. They felt they got good money for him , but his value to the team couldn’t be measured in £.
Great player for Southampton too.He was a great winger Armstrong. He never seemed to miss a match for Middlesbrough injured either.

Going to watch your lot tomorrow night at Exeter.Absolutely.
Criminal really the way Big Jacks team was allowed to be dismantled.
But yes, one of my favourite Boro players of all time - and doesn't seem to get the full recognition either
Jammy gets will probably get Mansfield/Port Vale in the quarters.Great player for Southampton too.
Probably should have got more recognition, but England had some very good players in his position at the time.
Same for Shaun Elliot in that England B team.
I really thought he was a magnificent, cultured, and hard centre half.
Used to idolise him.
And Joe
Going to watch your lot tomorrow night at Exeter.
My mates a big Exeter fan, and invited me along.
Seemed like a good idea at the time![]()
Iirc Bryan Robson (man utd ) played that day with Gary Birtles and Viv Anderson ( got their autographs )If it was against Spain it was possibly the same match I went to.

I've only ever seen England play once and it was at the old Wembley against West Germany and Armstrong played in that game, alongside such greats as Luther Blissett and Brian Stein. England lost 2-1 and I think Rummenigge got the winner. I can remember going to Ayresome Park in the Armstrong era and used to dread the ball going out to him, you could hear the buzz of anticipation that he would create something, like when Clarke gets the ball now for us. Cracking player from Durham, should have played for us. FTMSaw him play an England B international at Roker, and our Shaun Elliott was in the same side.
At work I'm flanked by a Boro supporter and a mag, both of the female variety.
No I've got a lady.Would you?
I'm 58 and I've genuinely never met oneI struggle to buy this “I’ve never met one” line. Sure, I’ve not personally lived in our absolute heartland, having been brought up in the South of the county in an area that was a genuine interface with Boro and in the West, where there were always a fair few Mags, but it’s more what happened after that.
Most of my contemporaries, whoever they supported, were scattered to the four winds for work whether within the region or beyond, because of the way the region has been royally shafted for decades. I’ve only recently got back to the broader North and to within striking distance of home fixtures, and even then I’m in solidly Leeds United territory at present. The way some are talking, you’d think we were still in the era of three generations down the same pit, drinking in the same pub or club, and only venturing out of the village to go to the match, or if they were lucky for their week by the seaside. I mean, come on, while I’m not disagreeing with the point people are making about where the real rivalry is directed, and what the real derby is, it’s 2023. I think you’re over egging it a bit.
I'm 59, and I "met" plenty in running battles around Ayresome back in the day.I'm 58 and I've genuinely never met one
I'll be there as well.Great player for Southampton too.
