Losing Clarke in January

Correct.

Hes a decent middle to lower Premier player.

The way people on here go on though, you'd think he was Messi.
Nobody thinks he's Messi.

But...

He's the best player we've had for years.

He's one of the best players in the league.

His numbers in terms of goals and assists are very good, and improving.

He's got a fantastic engine on him, capable of playing 90 minutes week in week out over a 46 game season.

He's at an age where you'd like to think if we could step up, he could make the step up with us comfortably. You've said yourself he's a "decent middle to lower Premier player", ergo he's more than good enough for a would-be promoted Sunderland side.

Unfortunately it seems more likely at present that he'll further his career elsewhere whilst we piss about developing more kids in the Championship. Which is a shame.

This is a good post

We wont have a choice. I reckon clarke and roberts will be away. roberts 6 mths left on contract. Clarke too much in demand to not have his head turned. Dont blame either of them tbh
I think where Clarkey's concerned, it'll depend on who it is that comes in for him.

I don't think he'd up sticks for an almost certainly relegated Burnley. What'd be the point of that?

If Brentford came with a big enough offer, the club'd certainly listen. It might depend on how safe they're looking if Clarke fancies it. It could depend on the package involved. He's been to the bright lights before and it hasn't worked out. He might bide his time for something closer to home in the summer.

I wonder if a newly promoted Leicester might not be a better fit for him. Leeds are still in the promotion chase anarl, and that's where it started for him. Could he return if they went up? Are they his boyhood club?

One thing's certain, I'll be amazed if he's still here next season unless we pull something out the bag and get promoted ourselves.

We won't sell clarke unless we feel we get above market value. Roberts is different with him being in his last year and not really delivering an end product and being older so will be at his peak value really (though he is great to watch). Clarke we have tied down to a decent contract and still young with plenty of potential and probably our most important player. Unless a really good offer comes in we won't sell.

If he downs tools he'll leave.

Without roberts and clarke we may aswell pack up. Literwlly the only 2 that produce anything worth talking about hence our problems

He won't be here next season if we aren't promoted and might not be the only one. Hopefully get some decent fees, but it's going to be another big test for the recruitment team, probably the biggest one yet.

I don't know why people are moaning, it was always the plan to sell these players on eventually. Yes it will be nice to keep them but if a good offer comes in they will be gone and Clarke is at the next level already. Bennete will get his chance and he will improve over time also. They are going to have to start eventually if they are to improve.

They are moaning because it would be massively weakening the team and none of the backup players look anywhere near ready to step up. Although its fair to say they haven't really had the opportunities yet.
