Kalvin Phillips signing for Manchester City

Another one where he’d be playing week in week out for most clubs in the league. Can’t see him ever getting a regular game there though.

If I was him I’d see out my contract getting the odd cup appearance. He’ll get no where near £150k elsewhere in England. Be daft to give that up, as well as working in the or one of the best facilities in the country.
I could be completely misunderstanding how contracts work in football (wouldn't be the first time either) but I was under the impression that if Man City sell him and he takes a lower wage elsewhere, they're still on the hook for paying him the full length of the contract minus whatever he's getting from the new club, so he's on £150k for the next five years whatever.

As I say, could be talking complete bollocks here though

Nah, that's not how it works.

Some players may be able to negotiate arrangements similar to what you have suggested if the club wants to get them off the books, but in almost all cases when a player transfers permanently the financial arrangement regarding weekly wages with the selling club ceases and whatever he negotiates with the buying club is what he will be paid.

The same way it does for any of us "normal" folk who change employers.

Naaaaaaaaah.
Players wadnt hang on as long at clubs doing next to nowt playing time wise if that was the case. It may well happen in some cases ie Cattermole but Maguire wanted his contract paying up befor going to WHU this summer. Which Utd wadnt or couldn’t do.

i wouldn't like.

imagine looking back on your career when your 50 years old and telling people that you played for England in a european championship final at the age of 25, then decided to sack your career off for money. he's played 24 times for man city, a total waste of a career

you'd be a old man full of regrets surrounded by material possessions.

its not as if his choice is either £150,000 per week at man city, or the dole

go and sign for villa or west ham or someone on £80,000 per week, you'll still be extremely rich but you can actually look back on your career full of highlights

It’s always easier for people to give up hypothetical money.

Like Maguire should have pushed for a move in the summer
Not the same imo.

Phillips will learn a lot training with Pep and his good.

Maguire will not get faster training with Ten Hag and is shite.

You can spin anything.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable not to jack in trying to get into the best club side in the world after one season, particularly not with Guardiola still on board.

It’s only two seasons man, I’d probably look back and wonder why I gave up after just one. You’ve got to aim for the top.

Technically won everything there is to win too at an English club.

Internationally was part of a side that got to a major final. Not bad.

Surely the next move for him is to go back to Leeds?
He won’t even entertain the idea of a championship club surely. Even if they went up he’s better than that.

He's having a mare tonight. Way off the pace, not a good fit for citeh.

As been mentioned . . Someone will buy him on past reputation ( see Rodwell. ) And he'll do fuck all ( like Rodwell ) .. and eventually go abroad for a bit of sun and a pressure free final pay day ( like Rodwell ) ... During most of this hell still manage to get in the England setup
